Europe vs Google

p2pnet.net News:- "Europeans have long bemoaned the influence of Hollywood movies on their culture," says the Associated Press.

Now, "plans by Google Inc. to create a massive digital library have triggered such strong fears in Europe about Anglo-American cultural dominance that one critic is warning of a ‘unilateral command of the thought of the world’," it says.

"For Europeans, the fear is that the continent’s contribution to the pillars of recorded knowledge will be crushed by a profit-oriented California company and may end up presenting a U.S.-centric version of the world’s literary legacy."

According to AP, they’re so worried that six European leaders have jointly proposed a "European digital library" to counter the project by Google Print, and, "Other countries are expected to come on board."

Nineteen national libraries have already signed a motion which urges action from the EU in response to Google’s plans, says the BBC, quoting Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker as saying, "We have to act."

Luxembourg holds the presidency of the EU.

"I say ‘yes’ because Europe must not submit in the face of virulent attacks from others," says Juncker.

Hmmm… McDonalds in Beijing and Google is the “virulent attacker”?

Okay, google’s plan may not be “Euro-centric” enough for some, but it hardly seems like a “virulent attack” to me. I’d say “US” tobacco, fast food, movie, music, and fashion companys to name a few are much more bent on ramming “American” (try “huge multi-national corporations that are loyal only to the money”) culture down the world’s collective throat (including the USA IMHO).

All Europeans should commit 40 hours per year or 400 Euros to creation of Wikipedia contributions in their own language, using the wealth of their knowledge and their parents, then Google would not stand a chance against the mass mobilisation of the people.
