Google blackout not a hack
p2pnet.net News:- Google’s 15 minute disappearance over the weekend prompted the company to dismiss the idea suggestions that its servers were in any way compromised.
Some reports said hackers may have been involved. This idea was quickly dismissed but, says New Scientist, the blackout has focused attention on the, “creaking addressing system that underpins the worldwide web”.
Google spokesman David Krane is quoted as saying the problem was related to the Domain Name System (DNS), which maps web names to the numerical Internet Protocol (IP) addresses used by computers.
The story also has Netcraft’s Paul Mutton saying suggesting the Google DNS server suffered a malfunction, meaning local DNS servers weren’t able to resolve www.google.com.
“The outage has nonetheless drawn attention to widespread reliance of many web users and services on Google and highlights existing concerns over the stability of DNS infrastructure,” says New Scientist, adding:.
“In March 2005, the National Academies Research Council, a US government-backed organisation based in Washington DC, issued a report criticising the current state of DNS infrastructure.”
