China’s $480 laptops

p2pnet.net News:- A Chinese computer manufacturer has stunned the domestic computer market with two AMD laptops, each priced at RMB3999, slightly more than $480.

DigitalChina`s new Chenglong A211C computer, adopts the AMD mobile AthlonXP-M2100+ processor, says ChinaTechNews. The Tianyun P180C also comes with an AMD processor.

Local media report. “Wu Haijun, a general manager at DigitalChina, says there is only about 100 yuan profit for each computer sold at this price level, says the story, adding:

The company will gradually optimize the configuration of its current products and plans to make them more valuable to consumers, but DigitalChina does not plan to offer even lower-priced machines.

In the US, Wal-Mart is already selling a $500 laptop and Taiwan’s Via Technologies plans to promote PCs to sell for close to $250 this fall in an attempt to gain ground in the consumer market, says CNET News,.

ChinaTechNews doesn’t say if the new DigiChina laptops will be available for foreign markets, but “The Terra PC is a reference design created by Via that will be licensed to PC makers around the world,” says CNET
