MPAA trumpets new filesharing ‘study’

p2pnet view Politics | Movies:- “Expect to see this ’study’ quoted ad nauseum in ‘findings’ emanating from various entertainment cartel disinformation units”, said p2pnet in a post on a new ‘study’ underlining the supposed horrors to the entertainment industry’s bottom line.

Constructed for the US Chamber of Commerce, it’s “about counterfeiting and ‘piracy’ in general terms”, we said, going on, “But, big surprise, file sharing gets most of the attention.

“According to the company, it’s responsible for more than a quarter of the guestimated $200 billion in lost sales.”

The MarkMonitor “findings” are a “call to arms for both government and the private sector”, says Hollywood’s MPAA, going on >>>

As the report demonstrates, a small number of rogue websites are generating mind-boggling traffic in pirated content. Billions of visits to these easily searchable websites — the vast majority of which are hosted in North America or Western Europe — translate into billions in lost revenue and lost American jobs. At a time of economic hardship, government and industry simply cannot stand by and allow businesses built on theft to flourish unimpeded and thereby handicap legitimate innovation and job creation. These websites and their operators are in our backyards; their lawlessness cannot be tolerated. We call on all concerned parties to redouble their efforts to address this scourge through vigorous law enforcement and robust inter-industry cooperation.

We will also work closely with Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy and House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith to secure passage of effective legislation to stop these rogue websites. All those concerned about the most creative and innovative sectors of our economy should do the same.

At least the latter two sentences reflect reality.

For “secure passage” read “create”.

Messrs Leahy and Smith are enthusiastic supporters of the entertainment cartels and will no doubt bend over backwards to be helpful.

Stay tuned for something from the RIAA?

*yawn* I don’t think anyone in the public takes this seriously anymore, especially when Hollywood has so many hits (even with viral internet exposure prior to the theatre exposure). For the movies that fail to be “hits” that’s because they give people the shits!

Seriously, how many more remakes? There are several in 2011 coming up. It’s like any year, same formula pumped out, no real stimulation, just useless regurgitation.

  2. RIAA Hater Says:

I find these statements from the “MPAA” and “RIAA” to be hilarious. They don’t scare me or anyone else. I love reading these stories while drinking coffee and downloading content.

  3. Anonymous Says:

These corporate parasites and the congresmen they corrupted are the one who should be scare.

  4. Anonymous Says:

Yet the ignoramus masses will STILL buy movie tickets and give money to the very same people that will try to create laws criminalizing file sharing. Bravo, ignorant fools. Enjoy being no better than livestock.

If you want to make a difference NEVER spend money on anything that comes from the legacy content industries.

  5. Anonymous Says:

“… translate into billions in lost revenue …”

I wonder if that “translation” is being done by the same tools that some of these websites use to make sense of chinese into english… The words are there, but they seem to be connecting together wrong or something because I can’t make anything out of those but confusion.

That imaginary money is beginning to get on my nerves. Is there even billions in the hands of conusmers to be spent anyways? If so I think I was absent the day they handed out all that cash.

  6. RK Says:

What is happening to the other 3/4% of loss sales… Is it that the product sucks?

  7. Dreddsnik Says:

” If you want to make a difference NEVER spend money on anything that comes from the legacy content industries. ”

    That does nothing either.

The loss from that is then blamed also on files haring. It’s a vicious circle which seems to only benefit them.

The more we boycott the more they have to blame on sharing.

If this is possible to win it will be won on the ‘information front’.

  8. Devil's Advocate Says:

Another “study”, courtesy of the “FRUIT SCIENTISTS”!
    :P

  9. Dreddsnik Says:

Statistics ARE the same as facts .. depending on what one already ‘believes’.

  10. Jeff Says:

Speaking of statistics, it brings to mind that famous phrase spoken by Mark Twain, paraphrased to apply here:

“There are lies, there are damned lies, then there are entertainment industry piracy statistics.”

Seems the only ones who believe the crap that MarkMonitor and more recently the IFPI put about about piracy are those in the industry themselves, their trolls and corporate shills.

  11. Jon Says:

    @ Jeff:

They don’t believe it either. After all, they made it up. But they hope you will.

    Cheers!
