Free Wi-Fi for a week

UK Wi-Fi enthusiasts haven’t exactly been falling over themelves to sign up for BT’s Openzone-in-a-Box.

So the telco is now offering seven days’ free, unlimited Wi-Fi access as part of a sign-them-up promo.

It hopes the deal (effective for the last week in January) plus a substantial drop in the cost of setting up a hot spot, will lure more people into using its Wi-Fi services.

BT currently runs around 1,700 hotspots in the UK and has reduced the cost of Openzone-in-a-Box from £400 (about $722) to £250 (about $451), says a ZDNet UK story here.

It’s also introduced a new pay-as-you-go service aimed at ‘occasional’ users who want to be billed per minute. It doesn’t call for a contract or subscription and will cost 20 pence per minute.
