Collaborative, mobile radio

p2pnet.net News:- Collaborative, mobile radio.

Sound cool? It is. And it’s open source.

Roadcasting is a prototype system meant to allow anyone to have their own radio station, “broadcasted among wirelessly capable devices, some in cars, in an ad-hoc wireless network”.

It’s the result so far of a seven-month Carnegie Mellon’s Human Computer Interaction Institute project using user-centered design techniques.

“The research and development arm of a major automaker commissioned us to create a revolutionary application and service for the car that uses mobile ad-hoc networks for a release target of 2010,” say the team members, Whitney Hess, Mathilde Pignol, Megan Shia, Jim Garretson and Jordan Kanarek.

The idea was to come up with ways to transform radio into a community-driven interactive medium.

“Using collaborative filtering technologies, it enables rich passive and interactive experiences for ‘DJs’ and listeners in a way that has not previously been possible,” says the crew, going on, “Roadcasting matches you to radio stations that play the content that you want to hear.

“With Roadcasting, it becomes incredibly easy to have your own radio station heard by others in their cars, homes, and offices within the reach of your ad-hoc network, determined by the wireless technology used.”

The system is a, “compelling alternative to radio that changes the way people listen to radio and builds community,” say the ficve developers.

“It effectively maintains the positive aspects of listening to the radio while minimizing or eliminating the negative aspects. Likewise, it enhances the positive aspects of being a DJ while reducing the negative.”

Source code for the concept prototype is available, “to encourage development of this novel service so that it may one day become the preferred radio delivery method.

“Roadcasting is powered by Processing and the Java Media Framework.”

I wonder how the government and cartels suppose they will control this development. If we move quickly enough, we may be able to regain our freedom.
