ratDVD: DVD compression ; )
p2pnet.net News:- We heard from AfterDawn’s Dela, yesterday, about an app that’s certain to shake the entertainment cartels to their very toe-nails if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.
From students at the university of Aarhus in Denmark and St Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (LETI) in Russia, it’s ratDVD. And it takes a full featured DVD movie and puts it into a highly compressed .ratDVD container format file without losing the features of the original DVD, promises project team leader Peter Jensen.
“RatDVD is the result of my downloading experiences,” he says on the site, going on:
“Downloading movies, even DVD rips never really worked out to what I expected. When I download movies, I want the full DVD features set and I want to be able to watch it on any DVD player - without loosing any features of the original DVD.”
And that’s what ratDVD can do for you, states Jensen.
What do you get with ratDVD?
- Full anamorphic picture, seamless branching, multiple video angles, multiple audio channels, subpictures, etc.
- Keep movie versions (Directors Cut, Theatrical version, etc.), Alternate story endings, making of, video commentary , cut scenes, etc..
- Keep complete menus, navigation and features
- Reliable high quality, valid check-summed container.
ratDVDs can be converted back to full size, full featured DVDs compatible with ANY player, says Jensen. “No fancy MPEG-4 functions needed and you have a real DVD for your ‘physical archive’.”
Double clicking a ratDVD file allows playback in Media player (or Zoom, MPC, etc.) with the complete DVD feature set.
Why ratDVD?
“In old Japan, rats had it good because a white rat was a messenger of one of the seven gods of luck, Daikoku,” says the FAQ.
“Because of this connection, they were not killed. The story goes that a rat couple wanted the strongest husband in the world for their daughter. They asked the sun who declined saying that clouds had more power because they could cover him up. When they asked a cloud, he responded, ‘The wind is stronger than I because it can blow me away.’ The wind could not make the grade either. ‘The wall stops me cold,’ he said. And the wall, though honored by the offer wailed, ‘The rat is stronger. He can bore a hole right through me.’ So the couple wisely gave their daughter in marriage to another rat who was indeed the strongest creature of them all.
“Additionally I just think that a rat is a cool, a little bit underground animal. I hope this has some
meaning for the format.”
Now you know : )
p2pnet tech manager Sixto Luis Santos is currently test driving it, and so is Dela, who says he’s pretty excited so far and that currently, ratDVD calls for users to have Microsoft Windows XP, DirectX 9.0, and Windows Media Player 10.
You can download a copy from p2pnet here, or from the ratDVD site here.

“ratDVD calls for users to have Microsoft Windows XP, DirectX 9.0, and Windows Media Player 10″
If this is supposed to be “underground” then why does it require crap like WMP10.
No thanks.

i can do all that with dvd decrypter and dvd shrink, then burn it with nero.
what’s so special about this?

ratDVD is supposed to be able to take a DVD, shrink it down to about 1GBish, keeping the entire disc intact, and making it so it can be re-expanded later for playback in a DVD.
That’s what makes it special.
Intial reports indicate it’s slow, but it’s only first release.
