p2pnet update

I’m a lucky man. My 2 heart attacks led to the discovery of major coronary blockages and I’m now slated for open heart surgery this coming Monday.

I’m still on my cellphone but with luck I’ll get online tomorrow.

Cheers, all …

I’ll bet this was the reason that walking any sort of distance left you breathless. No wonder. We’re all lucky they caught this in time.

    Here’s rootin’ for ya. :)

Oh wow, my heart just jumped into my throat upon reading this! I mean, on the bright side I suppose its good that this happened. Its more proof that every black cloud does indeed have a silver lining, no matter how dire things may seem. Even so, it can also seem like were jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire at times. Thanks for reminding us all that we should never take those precious moments of good health for granted. Its so easy to forget that with the day to day grind. Time marches on inevitably and before you know it, you’ll be all healed and looking back on this as a distant memory. That’s what I always tell myself when I have some dreadful procedure approaching, anyways. It’s the only way I’m able to continue putting one foot in front of the other. The ghouls have harvested both my gall bladder and my appendix, yet I’m still here (despite major complications) and you will be too. So good luck and godspeed!

    Hi everyone

Thank you all for your kind wishes and Jon is doing well. His biggest discomfort is not being able to be fully online – he is now in a private room with all the mod cons except for WIFI. He just found out there is no way for him to get online without a major expenditure of time and money. So he is bummed!!!

When he gets home, probably by the second weekend of April, he will have to make some major lifestyle changes, including how he does p2pnet. Obviously in the first couple of weeks after the op he is going to have to take things slowly and, beyond that, I think he is looking at converting p2pnet to a Wiki format to make it easier for others to contribute.

We will keep you updated on things here and thanks again.

    Liz

Good luck with the op, Jon! I’m rooting for you because you’re such a nice guy and you really make me happy. Thanks for all you’ve done and here’s hoping!

  9. Maroan Says:

All the best from Denmark to you Jon and Liz!

  10. Dorothy Says:

    Hey Jon,

I was without Internet at home for 4 days several years ago, and I nearly died of the withdrawal symptoms :) , so I feel for you!

I will be thinking of you on Monday, and I am guessing that Liz will let us know how it went. (Thanks Liz!)

Best wishes to you and your 2 ladies.

  11. Robert Says:

Take care of yourself Jon, you only get one life! No luck, just get yourself well again!

  12. Enrico Pallazzo Says:

I’m glad you’re doing well. It sucks that you have to have open heart surgery but if you can beat 2 heart attacks you can get through this too. I think something similar happened to Letterman several years ago and he recovered quickly and he’s still cracking jokes today. We’re all pulling for you.

  13. EE Says:

Take care of yourself Jon. Hope you feel well soon!!

  14. Wozzzaaa Says:

Good Luck Jon, all the best!

New Samsung Laptops come with a Keylogger Factory Pre-installed

    http://www.networkworld.com/newsletters/sec/2011/032811sec2.html?page=1

While setting up a new Samsung computer laptop with model number R525 in early February 2011, I came across an issue that mirrored what Sony BMG did six years ago. After the initial set up of the laptop, I installed licensed commercial security software and then ran a full system scan before installing any other software. The scan found two instances of a commercial keylogger called StarLogger installed on the brand new laptop. Files associated with the keylogger were found in a c:\windows\SL directory.

According to a Starlogger description, StarLogger records every keystroke made on your computer on every window, even on password protected boxes.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Are you sure the only way is open heart surgery?

Could they use a catheter instead? I am sure it will go well anyway though.

In any case I wish you very well and a fast and smooth recovery!

Samsung Cleared of Laptop Keylogger Accusation
It turns out an antivirus suite mistakenly classified a Microsoft folder as a keylogger

    hxxp://www.pcworld.com/article/223859/samsung_cleared_of_laptop_keylogger_accusation.html#tk.nl_dnx_t_crawl

Samsung Electronics’ laptops do not contain a secret program that logs keystrokes, security researchers have found, chalking the problem up to a mistake by an antivirus program.

An IT consultant based in Toronto, Mohamed Hassan, said on Wednesday he bought a Samsung R525 and later a R540 laptop and found the StarLogger program made by a company called de Willebois Consulting. StarLogger can log all keystrokes and capture screenshots.

But Samsung and the security company F-Secure did further research and found that the VIPRE antivirus software mistakenly associated a Windows root directory folder called “SL” with StarLogger.

In a statement on its website , Samsung said the SL folder is a Microsoft Live Application folder for multi-language support. The “SL” stands for the Slovenian language, and other folders are installed depending on language, such as “KO” for Korean and “EN” for English.

“Our findings indicate that the person mentioned in the article used a security program called VIPRE that mistook a folder created by Microsoft’s Live Application for a key logging software, during a virus scan,” Samsung said.

    F-Secure bought and tested a series of Samsung laptops — the R540, RF710, QX310, SF510, X125 and NF310 — and didn’t find StarLogger.

GFI Software, which makes VIPRE, could not be immediately reached for comment.
