Update on Jon

p2pnet view P2P | Freedom | Off Topic-

Hello everyone

Jon has developed post-op complications and he is not doing very well right now. We hope his situation will improve in the next couple of days. I will keep you posted.

For the moment, if any of you have interesting links or any other RELEVANT information you think fellow readers might like to know about, please post them under this story as comments.

I will be checking Jon’s regular email for now if you wish to contact us through that.

It would really help Jon to know p2pnet readers have rallied behind him to carry on and to keep this site functioning in a polite and productive manner.

Thank you all

Liz and Emma

    Liz, Emma, and Jon…

There isn’t much anyone can say that hasn’t been said already here
    or through emails.

You all should know and always remember that we’ve been behind you in every
fight, and this doesn’t change how much we appreciate what Jon and you all do
    and how you do it.

We’re with you all the way, for sure. Suffice it to say, all our prayers and hopes
for Jon’s speedy recovery are with you all the time. You can certainly count on us
to do what we can to keep p2pnet going.

I think we were all just waiting to hear from you first our concern for Jonis what’s been foremost
in our minds. We’re still here. You’ve not been abandoned, and neither has p2pnet.

    You can count on us.

Take care of yourselves, and please give Jon our warmest regards. We’re here and waiting

    Relentless Facebook Self-Promoters are Narcissists
A study confirms what Facebook friends of narcissists already knew (and don’t ‘like’).

    hxxp://www.pcworld.com/article/224519/

Who could see this one coming? That is, besides anyone with a Facebook account.

New research concludes that college students who use Facebook and other technology platforms to proclaim their awesomeness — rather than, you know, connecting with their inferiors other human beings — exhibit classic signs of narcissism.

Flagler College psychology professor Meghan Saculla and Western Kentucky University psychology professor W. Pitt Derryberry will present their findings at an educational research conference that begins on Friday in New Orleans.

The researchers observed how 279 students used Electronic Media and Communication Devices (EMCDs) to post content to popular social networking sites, and then followed up with surveys to determine students’ self-perceptions. The goal of the study was to determine links between technology use, narcissism and the development of moral judgment.

    From ars technica’s Jacqui Cheng:

The researchers’ main finding confirmed their previous suspicions: students who used technology and social media tools specifically to promote themselves and attempt to gain popularity tended to come off as narcissistic. Those students also tended to self-report as narcissistic, showing a correlation between perception and self-reporting.

“[M]ales reported that they are more likely than females to use Facebook/MySpace as a vehicle for popularity, to use cell phones as a means of creating a medial identity, to isolate themselves with these technological devices, and to use Facebook/MySpace and cell phones for exhibitionistic display,” reads the paper. “[T]hough females tend to use EMCDs more often than males, the attitudes of males regarding their EMCD usage appear to be more detrimental for social functioning.”

    Two quick points here:

    * They use MySpace as a “vehicle for popularity”? Really? Were they also wearing raccoon coats and doing the Jitterbug?
    * “The attitudes of males regarding their EMCD usage appear to be more detrimental for social functioning.” Translation: College guys can be real jerks. Technology or no technology, it’s reassuring to know that some things never change.

Saculla and Derryberry acknowledge the limitations of their research, including a larger sample of female students and a limited socioeconomic demographic.

The professors also emphasize they’re not suggesting that using electronic devices and social networking automatically makes you (or transforms you into) a narcissist. The self-love comes first. The social networking and EMCDs are tools for making the rest of the world love the narcissists as much as the narcissists love themselves. Which, if you know any narcissists, actually is fairly impossible.

A French representative want to pass a law against Anonymous.

The UMP MP Muriel Marland-Militello will file a bill aimed at strengthening penalties for cyber attacks against public institutions, to extend them to DDOS attacks, and suspend the access of users who are involved in these attacks . The Anonymous are directly targeted.

It is doubtful that such a law will have any effect since anonymous is an international phenomena and only it French component can be reached.

Moreover anonymous could in response to such a law start using Ddosing tools who preserve the anonymity of the attacker. Too make thing worst for the public institution it turn out that such tools are also much more powerful than the LOIC canon.

  25. Reader's Write Says:

Get well soon Jon! Article below

Yahoo! held Liable for Contributing to Copyright Infringement

The Court of Rome holds search engine giant Yahoo! liable for assisting copyright infringement of hit Iranian movie “About Elly”

Yahoo! Italia was dealt a blow this week after the Court of Rome ruled it was liable for contributing to copyright infringement. The ruling surrounds the award winning Iranian movie “About Elly” which appeared on numerous streaming websites and P2P file sharing networks illegally.

The court said Yahoo! italia was liable because it recieved notification from PFA – (the italian distributor of the movie) that it’s search index was linking to websites and services which allowed users to easily find and watch unauthorised copies of the movie. PFA also claimed that the unauthorised links were appearing higher in search results that the films official website thus making users more likely to visit an unauthorised site.

    Yahoo! italia did not respond to the PFAs takedown request and as a result ended up in the Court of Rome. PFA asked the court to;

1.Order Yahoo! italia to remove the infringing links.
2.issue an injunction to prevent further infringement activities.
3.order Yahoo! italia to pay €1,000 ($) for each minute and €10,000 ( $) for each day of delay in complying with the order.
4.Provide for publication of the order.
A little over the top maybe?

The order focused on Articles 14-17 of the E-commerce Decree (70/2003) of which information societies intermediaries, access providers, caching providers and hosting providers are not liable for infringement if they have no knowledge of or control over the infringing data.

However, the court ruled that the search giant was well aware of the infringing links, but chose to ignore them. For that reason the court ordered the removal of all infringing links effective immediatly. Unfortunatly for Yahoo!, the court did not disclose the URLs in question which is sure to cause a headache.

Speaking after the ruling Yahoo! italia said it would be appealing the decision.

The big question on everyone’s lips is how this will effect future rulings in other countries and for search engines in general. One thing is for sure, it would be near impossible for search engines to locate and remove any items alleged to be infringing of copyright.

I had complications from surgery once. The doctor didn’t expect me to live and told my wife as much. Yet, here I am a decade later, alive and still kicking. I just wanted to say that you will pull through this. The hard part will soon be behind you and you’ll be back reporting on p2p issues before you know it, and your followers will certainly be happy to have you back at the helm. If it wasn’t for p2pnet, I’m not sure I’d truthfully know what was going on in Canada in terms of the latest copywrong schemes. Who is behind Crooks, content manipulation, information suppression, throttling, usage based billing, obscenely high internet prices, double billing and rest of poor status of our internet. One of the hints is: http://www.rabble.ca/news/2011/03/ubb-fight-starts-simple-message-sell-bell
You can check links 30 deep and you will find the same players: Bell, Rogers, Verizon, Telus, Cogeco and all major ISPs [internet service provider] as well as the richest of the rich in Canada, USA and UK. These Billionaires own just about every major business, bar none. I say Billionaires only because that’s what their accounting books show. Reality is they own much more and collect much more as well.
Anyone that high up who scams the public is playing Art of War and controls legal and illegal markets. They may be behind many layers of so called legal protection but they sure do dabble in them, and extensively. They use legal means to give themselves loopholes to perpetrate extortion and fraud while saying it’s perfectly OK to do so.
Legal meaning Admiralty Law, Law of the seas and shipping. This requires your consent, as in an agreement or contract of some short, and they have many ways to scam you by such tactics. It starts off with advertizing, false advertizing and goes on to media manipulation, misinformation, secrecy of their operations, favors for their affiliates and host of other methods.
Friends in almost all developed countries report their internet and access to information is greatly better: 100 MBps connections or better, much higher upload speeds, TV & internet & phone & cell phones & movies & music for equivalent of about 40 dollars per month, much better transparency, much better support. They laugh when told of the draconian business practices taking place in Canada, USA and UK. They laugh at us for not putting the filthy rich, ISPs, government and businesses feet to the fire.
    Solutions:
    - boycott these ripoff businesses and all other companies they own
    - support your local small ISPs until those ripoff big ones bend to our will or fall
    - don’t pay your bills via cheque or credit card, pay in cash only
    - force Bell to accept payment at there outlets
    - complain and make complaints again them at every turn
    - charge them for your lost time and any time you have to deal with them [usual rate is 500 per hour and up]
    - take them to Common Law Court [with jury of your peers] for any infractions
    - don’t settle for deals where they pay you off to keep quiet
    - study there Unlawful system and find cracks and hidden remedy
    - get together in groups and find Lawful ways to charge them
    - you have the right to start your own ISP, have fiber installed to your home and share it, and pay for it with your personal account as an essential service
    - Canadians paid for Infrastructure and own it. NOT Bell Rogers Telus and others … they are only caretakers of it, poor ones at that. Demand cheaper prices or there disbandment.

If we don’t then you will see highest internet speeds of 4 MBps download and 0.5 upload, everything censored, prices skyrocket and many sitting in those jails Harper just singed off on.

Anyone wants more details then ask.

You all know Jon to have a tremendous will power and I think that has not been affected. He is starting show his sense of humour again and he was demanding coffee and his beloved hot sauce. The coffee, Emma and I administered to him via a spray bottle because he wasn’t supposed to have thin liquids in the first few days.

I don’t think it will be too many days before he will post something here, either on his own or via us.
