The MPAA and LA pirates

p2pnet.net News View:- What’s all this fuss I hear about pirates in downtown Los Angeles? asks p2pnet reader Elmer Litella.

His question was sparked by our MPAA spy cameras in LA post which revealed the MPAA has succeeded in suborning the Los Angeles Police Department.

Because now, instead of wasting taxpayer money looking for hand-bag snatchers, muggers, car thieves, etc, LAPD cops will, on behalf of the Big Seven movie studios, be monitoring the city`s fashion district. And they’ll be using gear supplied by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) to find ‘pirates’.

The MPAA is delighted to assist the fine and dedicated efforts of Los Angeles law enforcement officials in catching people selling illegal DVDs, quoth MPAA mouthpiece John G. Malcolm. It is our pleasure to assist them with these cameras which will help them lift a rock and shine a light on rampant counterfeiting of DVDs which used to take place in the dark shadows.

Lift a rock and shine a light. Ahhhhr

But, I’ve walked around downtown Los Angeles many times and I’ve never seen any pirates, Elmer says.

I haven’t seen anyone with a peg leg or with a parrot sitting on their shoulder.

Sure, I’ve seen men with one gold earring, but most of them live in West Hollywood, not on a Pirate ship!

Besides, how does the pirate ship get near downtown anyhow? It’s not near the water! You think the Coast Guard would notice or the CHP would notice a pirate ship on the 110. You don’t even see pretend pirates from the studios doing errands at lunch time because they don’t even make pirate movies any more.

So they are going to put up cameras to catch the pirates who aren’t there? This sounds just so silly and dumb. It’s almost like……

Oooooh, wait, maybe that’s it! The cameras are there to make a new pirate movie, only it’s a secret, so people won’t act all goofy and silly like they do when a TV news crew is around.

“Okay, I’ll be quiet now.”

Nice one Elmer.

Just get a few folks out there to hand legit dvd’s back and forth to each other and act all suspicious. Trench coats, sunglasses, and some funky “spy like” lines such as “Are you the brown bear?” or “I am the key master.”, should throw the oh so helpful PD off of even bothering with this.

people of LA should all get together and walk around downtown in view of the cameras wearing eye patches and give the cameras their own version of the bird.

Then the MPAA will claim illegal sharing in the streets is costing them billions of dollars. They push to pass a law that says we cannot trade anything anywhere without their written permission, or we will go to jail for a time no less than 10x the sentance given to a real criminal.

is this really about pirated movies…or is this big brother? this spot is known for heroin and crack…who is really being watched?

I don’t think the MPAA would shell out that kind of money to stop drugs. they’re interested in something far more dangerous and important (notice the sarcasm), after all isn’t that what tax dollars are for?

go out on the street and give out dvd’s and cd’s full of p2p programs or with certain ones that you like. :-)

These are the guys who were all too happy to attack Second Ammendment rights and bite the hand that feeds them by supporting a ban on .50 Caliber rifles which was based on emotionally driven arguements (”Think of the children!”) with blind disregard of facts (”.50 Calibers have yet to be used in a single crime in their 90 years of existance.”)…

The only thing they ever got right was allowing patrol officers to carry AR-15 rifles in their squad cars. (Note, AR-15s aren’t assault weapons, despite what the recently expired ban’s creators led the public to believe). Then again, they supported the ban.

… So why am I not surprised that they’re bowing to another waste of resources?
