The Games Game
p2pnet.net View:- "A little while ago, one of my parent’s friends (who have a 10th year old son with a Play station) asked me about one of the games that his son was playing," posts Imperious on RespectP2P, going on:
"He asked why the games were so violent and unrealistic. The particular game his son was playing was the new Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He didn’t understand how his son could drive a car and then jump out and shoot 25 bad guys without getting hurt. So I tried to explain, but ever since it’s been bugging me. "Because he is right, what is the point of these days’ video games? I’ll try to explain in this article what the point is, in this article.”

The point of Video Games these days
By Imperious – RespectP2P
The Plot
Okay, let’s first start with the basic. Every game has a plot or history and the person who is playing it is given a role in this. It could be everything from driving a car to commander your troops in the Second World War. That’s the nice thing about the plot; the creators of the game can send you anywhere they want. This could seem a bit unrealistic because the creators could never know how the world looked 500 years ago. But it’s this that makes games so great, they create this world as they think it looks and then they throw a lot of stuff in it to make it seem real. Let’s take an example of a game. Thieves 3: Shadows is taking place in the 14th century or some time around there. And the history behind this is well planned. You play as a thief and have to steal from people, sell your stolen stuff to merchants and buy new supplies for your use. Like smoke bombs, flash bombs and arrows. Also it leads you through a series of missions were you have to sneak into several places to steal different special things and all these things lead back to the games plot. To solve the big riddle in the game.
The Environment
As the plot have the free opportunities to take you to what year and time they will, the environment goes with it. To create a perfect 14th century stile you have make the environment real, and so the creators will have to do some research on how people lived back then. They can make the weather good or bad, send you to a swamp or to the desert. But to match the games plot they have to make it as real as possible. Time for an example, in Thieves 3: Shadows the environment is very dark and everything is build of stone. The game creators have hit the right button when they created this game. Because the plot is about a thief and the environment is so nicely created, so that the thief can slide right into the shadows and disappear. One of the first missions sends you to an Inn were you have to steal some stuff. Here you can see that without the electricity there is basically no light inside after the sunset. So you can sneak around in the shadows and turn out the candles that are the only light. In this particular game the only bummer about the environment is that you can hide completely in the shadows, even if the guards is walking right besides you, they wont see you. But if you see it like the happy gamer type, they have to make it a little unrealistic or else there wouldn’t be any fun in it. If the guard could see you anywhere, many wouldn’t make it through the first mission. So sometimes the game creators have to offer some realistic to make a game that people can complete.
The Hero
In every game there is a hero and there are some bad guys. Most of the time you play as the hero who have to get down on these bad guys for some reasons, it could be revenge, money or just that you want to take over the town. The hero in games is often stronger than any small foot soldiers you meet. But in some games there are super bosses that are stronger than the regular enemies. So when you meet them there’s going to be a battle. But then it’s good that the hero most of the time has some abilities that he/her can use in the battle against evil. Lets take and example
In the RPG game Diablo II you play as a hero that has to defeat evil on earth. When you start you can manage the monster pretty well, but when you advance into the game you’ll see that the enemies are getting stronger as well as you are. In this game the hero can collect weapons to its disposal, and because the game is set in the medieval time, the weapons and protection it can collect are swords, axes bows and for the magician some magic staffs. All these things come in handy when making the hero stronger, also every time a certain amount of creatures is defeated your hero gains in level, which makes it stronger.
The Enemies
Every game has one. Without the enemy to compete against there is no fun in the game. But the creators of the game have to make a very fine line on how good these enemies are. In a racing game the opponent don’t have to be so hard to take, and also most of the time they are driving a planned route in the game. So I’ll say in such games there A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) is on a very low stage. But in the new Shoot-Em-Up and 3rd person shooter games the A.I. of the enemies are increasing all the time. The perfect goal is to make the enemies act like they were real people, but again to give the players a fair chance to complete the game; they might make them a little dumb. In many games you also have the ability to set the game difficulty. So if you’re totally new in the gaming world most of the time you can put the game on Easy difficulty and if you’re a bad ass gamer through many years you can increase the difficulty to Medium or Hard. In the Hard game mode, in most 3rd person shooter games, the enemies are more alert to you. They sense you better and shoot better. In hard mode sometimes the only thing thats needed to kill you, is 1 bullet.
The Health
In 3rd person shooter games your character are given a certain amount of health to start with. Now you have to survive in the game. The most shoot-em-up games are based at the same ground. But it’s different in each game how much damage you can take to lose all of your health. In certain games you just have to get shot once and you’re gone! In other games you can have guys empty there machineguns at you but you just pull your gun and shoot them one after the other, and when done you go get some new health. Most people like the games were you don’t die of one shot. They like when you can go around and engage a shooting duel with an entire gang of hardcore gangsters, and win it. The idea in these games is simple. Violence. There are games were you can go around and cut peoples leg and head of. Or drive into them so they fly 30 feet over the ground. Some might say that the young people who play these kinds of games are taking damage in their head because of them. And when they grow up they become psychopaths and start think they are in the games. And in some cases it might happen. They might think they are the hero in the game and have almost unlimited health. But this is very unusual.

I don’t understand the point of this article. It explains the basics of the majority of video games sure, but the same kind of breakdown can be applied for example to any Hollywood film. But to simplify a whole genre like this is mis-informed short-sighted to say the least.
The point of video games is escapism. To do things you cant in real life- drive fast, save the hostages, explore amazing worlds, kill the bad guys etc etc. And many games achieve this so impressively they verge on works of art.
My question is, why was the 10 yr old playing GTA:SA in the first place a 18 rated game (in the UK). Surely the father should have been asking “Why am I letting my child play this” rather than “What is the motivation for my child playing this”

It’s probably posted to provoke a bit of a debate.

I mean really, video games are supposed to be a suspension of reality, an escape, an exercise of hand-eye coordination or maybe, just maybe a fun distraction. Cripes even simulation games are out of touch with reality, be it historical or physics or what have you.
This articles opinion could be extrapolated onto almost anything, hmmm lets see…old-school board games for instance. I don’t usually see giant thimbles or walking tophats on park avenue purchasing massive amounts of real estate, do you? If so, please give me some of what you’re smoking ‘cuz it sounds like it kicks ass. You could even go so far as saying that reality TV shows have nothing to do with reality per say and are nothing more than escapism from the usual drudgery of everyday life etc…just as vids are supposed to be.
Now on the point of mindless violence, don’t let your 8 year old play the bloody game if you feel it’s inappropriate for that age. However that being said, I think there is something inherently wrong with the video game industry policing themselves on appropriate content for minors. But thats a slippery slope allowing governement regulation into more of our lives.
The point is that these things shouldn’t be molding our lives or our childrens lives, that’s the parents, teachers etc jobs. There’s been a lot of criticism over the last couple of decades on how children spent too much time watching TV – which is rife with mindless violence and suspension of reality – however, if anything it’s only gotten worse on those fronts recently, but there is more awareness that there should be a balance struck between watching TV and other aspects of a childs youth, ie sports, education, reading etc. It’s all about balance and finding your own and one for your children, not censoring or regulating for the masses.

They police themselves and rate the games to make the parents feel good. Politicians can say they supported legislation that protects our children, everyone applaudes as to why this is such a great thing. Parents feel the government and inustry are trying to protect their babys from the harshness of life. kids still go out and play what they want. everyones happy.
We had a friend who never subscribed to cable (too much violence and sex) and would only let their children watch Disney type films. My kids watched things like James Bond, Die Hard etc… as well as Disney (which is a terrible role model as far as companies go) and I see little difference in their view of life and reality. Ultimately let the parents decide and keep the government out of it.

First of all, the 10 year old was not playing. But here was the original question ….. “He asked why the games were so violent and unrealistic”
Violent BUT unrealistic should be the key phrase. The players want a game that they can realistically beat, but gamers want more voilence in the games.

read the post 2 up about suspension of reality being part of all games, TV and the rest of entertainment, I think it addresses your post quite well.
