DVD Decrypter bites the dust

p2pnet.net News:- Entertainment industry Bully-Boys have gotten to Lightning UK, the creator of DVD Decrypter.

DVD Decrypter is a free tool that allows you to decrypt and copy DVDs to your PC’s hard disk, he said on his site, once upon a time.

From there you can watch them with the likes of WinDVD and PowerDVD, you can write them back to DVD-R / DVD-RW / DVD+R / DVD+RW / DVD+R DL / DVD-RAM media or you can convert them to VCD / SVCD / DivX for burning onto CD-R / CD-RW.

DVD Decrypter can write most types of CD / DVD images via its ‘ISO Write’ mode, and it supports all the latest writers (including booktype / bitsetting on many of the major ones – i.e. BenQ, LiteOn, NEC, Plextor, Sony). You can even use DVD Decrypter to erase / format your rewritable media!

But no longer.

A certain company” has decided they don”t like what I`m doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves, says Lightning UK in a post on cdfreaks, going on:

I`ve no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter.I realise this is going to be one of those “that sucks – fight them!” kinda things, but at the end of the day, it”s my life and I”m not about to throw it all away (before it has even really started) attempting to fight a battle I can”t possibly win.

Shades of 321 Studios.

(Thanks, Marsha)

Lightning UK should come here in the US, where developing tools that circumvents copyright protections isn’t illegal, as recently ruled by Supreme Court.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Was DVD Decrypter open source? If not, LIGHTNING UK! should release the source code, that is the best way to say FU to the copyright dick heads. You can’t clamp down on the whole world, someone from another country can maintain the project.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

yes i agree make it open source!

  4. Reader's Write Says:

It’s too late now unfortunately. He’s going to get himself in trouble for doing that. Best thing would be if some of the other ripping tools would relase the code into the wild which would destray any chance these guys have of controlling it, like PGP did.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Since when is it legal to bypass the css encyrption on a movie dvd in the united states ?

What kind of drugs are you on ?

According to the DMCA it is ILLEGAL to DISTRIBUTE DECSS ENCRYPTION UTILITIES in the united states .

Maybe it’s not illegal to USE these kinds of things but lightining uk has the same problem as the now defunct 321 studios had .

It is ILLEGAL to distribute or sell DECSS utilities in the united states PERIOD…………………….

The MPAA would have every legal recourse to SUE THEIR ASSES OFF.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

yes i agree make it open source!

    check this site http://www.ratdvd.dk/

“and it supports all the latest writers (including booktype / bitsetting on many of the major ones – i.e. BenQ, LiteOn, NEC, Plextor, Sony).”

Is Sony really making writers that support bitsetting now?
Sony has always been against this and I don’t know of any Sony dvd writers
that support this. Perhaps they have changed their minds?

    Check this out

  10. Reader's Write Says:

errrr ratDVD explicitly states that it does not circumvent copy protection and advises u to use dvd decrypt… any way these are completely different tools, ratdvd is for compression, if ud ever used dvddecrypt ud know it isnt, its for removing encryption, nothing more… looks liek ure jst a fanboy spamming for his latest toy

  11. Reader's Write Says:

Due to a recent supreme court decision, those laws are no longer enforceable..

  12. Reader's Write Says:

I have RatDVD, but as you will read on their site, ratDVD cannot copy protected DVD’s. You have to use a program such as DVD Decryptor to copy it to your HDD while removing the encryption before you can use ratDVD on it.

However, tools such as these may become more and more helpful as time goes by and new DVD drives come out that DVD Decryptor can’t work with. You can still use it to strip the CSS and then use a more modern tool to write it to a DVD.

I think we will see more and more programs like this – they will do all the writing work while proclaiming themselves to not work with protected DVD’s. This will make it difficult for the MPAA thugs to shut them down, but allow users to still make copies of their DVD’s by using a combination of tools.

  13. Reader's Write Says:

rat is sweet program tho. Compressing a full DVD down to a manageable (read: downloadable) size.

I can see studio execs now. The red creeps up to the slightly balding forehead, the body starts to shake and all of a sudden, !BLAM! – the head explodes.

Cool! Just like in the movies!

  14. Reader's Write Says:

I use it for my needs. It is free, open source, and contains no spyware. I use it, and I love it. It is one of the many benefits of running Linux.

linkage to the story covering it…?

  17. Reader's Write Says:

Lite-On is making all of Sony’s DVD-+R drives as Sony could not compete economically since the 4x days.

Just look at some close up pictures.

  18. Reader's Write Says:

The second poster is correct. Care to note which decisions to which you are referring invalidating the DMCA? The DMCA remains fully enforceable and distribution of decss is illegal.

  19. Reader's Write Says:

I’d recommend making download mirrors in the countries where using DVD Decrypter is still legal. For example:

    http://www.hot.ee/dvddecrypter/

  20. Reader's Write Says:

Sounds like drip. Although perhaps that is more divx oriented.
Thanks for the info anyway. I’ve been looking for something like this under linux.

  21. Reader's Write Says:

I frankly have a hard time with his story or otherwise he would have made public the business entity intent of involving him in some adverse legal litigation.

It might have occurred to him the UK is just as assinine as the united states when it comes to intellectual property.

It almost sounds like the same hoax the owner/developer of the former bit torrent was foisting on unsuspecting people who donated to his legal defense.

It almost sounds like the software developer was really dissatified about the chump change he was making from donations being a second rate computer programmer developing and distributing his computer program and he was not making a fortune on his software like bill gates and some of the more notable ( AND RICHER ) computer software developers.

BESIDES DON’T YOU PEOPLE THINK IT IS QUITE ODD THAT IF ALL OF THIS WAS TRUE LIGHTINING UK WAS BEING SUED BY THE ENTERTAINMENT CARTEL THEY WOULD HAVE AS MUCH MEDIA COVERAGE AS POSSIBLE ON THE SUBJECT SPLATTERING THE STORY ALL OVER THE INTERNET AND BASICALLY COVER THE STORY MUCH LIKE THE CRUCIFICTION OF JESUS CHRIST.

    I don’t buy his story …………….

  22. Reader's Write Says:

Thanks for the info unfortuntely my writer wasn’t made by Rite-On.
Sony is still making the firmware for the units they sell under their brand which does not allow bitsetting. This means people will have to flash their new writers with Lite-On or other hacked firmware. People shouldn’t be led into buying Sony writers believing that is now allowing bitsetting. Just check out http://www.videohelp.com if you don’t believe me.

Why is this important to me. Because I have a dvd-recorder that writes data on DVD+R/W disks which I can’t read on my laptop because it doesn’t read “+” disks.
Fck U very much Sony and IBM.

  23. Reader's Write Says:

I have two Lite-on’s both with the Lite-On brand name on them. They were purchased a couple of years apart and still function fantastically. Only thing is, the newest didn’t support +R burning while the older one does. Other than that, I will hate to see the day that they wear out. Making coasters has become one of those things I forgot you can do.

I got them both figuring that with the rumblings that were being said everywhere that it was going to probably go the path of changes to the burners to limit what you can do with them. But I guess if I can flash a bios I can flash a burner once I learn how. I resent the attempt at control that the **AA’s are attempting to do, have done, and I am sure will continue to try to do.

  24. Reader's Write Says:

First off get your facts strait guy.

the owner of bit torrent never did anything of the sort. That was just a bit torrent tracking site that did that. and if you think if Lightining is lieing then what reason would he have. hes not fighting, hes not asking for help, and he has to hand over the domain.

If your going to rant then that fine but at least get you dam facts strait

  26. Reader's Write Says:

Ok super genius what kind of a windows programming compiler would i need to write this program and what computer language would i program it in ?

  27. Reader's Write Says:

Looks like C to me, you could compile with GCC.

  28. Reader's Write Says:

    Thank you for the link.

  29. Reader's Write Says:

So,they take away 1 great tool and live you with a rat.

  30. Reader's Write Says:

You are welcome. If possible, set up forther download mirrors and/or spread the link(s).

  31. Reader's Write Says:

Great comeback. You get your ass shot off, and all you can think of is “Oh yeah? . . . Well . . . Polish your gun next time!”

  32. Reader's Write Says:

I just would like to spread the word and let everyone know, you can now find DVD Decrypter at: http://www.dvddecrypter.r8.org After a lot of hard work, I’ve brought the website back! The bad news is I lost all my programers which means unitl I find a new team I will only provide version 3.5.4.0 for download. If you have programming skills please e-mail me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! I’m looking for a wide range of people including reverse engineer, C++, C+ or anyone who knows how to update and maintain software programs!! If you have these skills, Please contact me immediately at: lightninguk.dvddecrypter@gmail.com and please know you will work out of the kindness of your heart as I can not pay you unless someone wants me to add a “Donate NOW” link to the web page! As you also know, I have lost rights to the domain name of: http://www.dvddecrypter.com I hope to set up a “Donate Now” link to get donations for a new domain or new host, what ever I can afford! I also had to redo the logo in the top left corner. I even lost the forum as well so it will be a while for me to redo the new one and you will have to reregister. It took a lot of time to get this site back up, and it would be nice if someone could help me find a new development team and more places to host DVD Decrypter for download!
