Help!!

Hi all: as most of you know, I’m slowly and painfully recovering from two heart attacks, a stroke and open-heart surgery. I’ve tried hard to keep p2pnet going by myself with the help of my wife, Liz but it’s proving too much for me. So now I’m inviting joint-venture and partnership proposals from anyone who may be interested in helping to keep the flag flying. If this looks like something you’d want to become involved in, contact me at p2pnet @shaw.ca and I’ll get right back to you.

One alternative would be to create a user forum, which could then evolve as an entity on its own, allowing people to create their own news stories as well as talk about their interests.

Basically a democracy rather than a dictatorship. :)

  2. Devil's Advocate Says:

“…a democracy rather than a dictatorship.”

    @RW:

You better not be going where you appear to be going with that one.

And, in case you somehow just couldn’t see it happening in front of you, people CAN create their own stuff, and submit it for posting. If that request is denied, it would be because of the material doesn’t fit with the site’s own agenda.

That’s not dictatorship. Considering a site has the right to decide what it wants to publish, what I’ve outlined IS a democracy. I think you’re looking for something similar to an anarchy.

To be fair, I’m not saying the concept can’t work. But, to do it, Jon would have to give everyone administrator rights to his site, including any would-be k00ks and trolls, and the challenges they bring, in order to allow “free posting”.

Another would be to spend your own time and money to create your very own site in which you
can create this ‘democracy’ , all of your very own. Once you do, please don’t hesitate to provide a
    link to it.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

“Basically a democracy rather than a dictatorship”

    This does not make sense.

What about a democratic novel or painting where everyone can write and scribble what he want?

If you apply your so call “democracy to this site it will become infested with paid trolls from the corporate parasites. So far they managed to hire one or two permanent trolls for each of this information/opinion site using several hand made personas.

  5. Crosbie Fitch Says:

If I had the time I’d produce a customised version of MediaWiki with a familiar p2pnet css skin, and upload all the p2pnet articles and comments into it. One could leave the existing site up as a permanent read-only archive. Then p2pnet would be edited and produced by the people for the people.

  6. Dorothy Says:

    Jon,

For now, rather than making big changes to the site, why not just open up a new thread for each day for that day’s news, and invite people to post headlines? This is what was happening after your heart attacks, and seemed to work (in my opinion). I think people may have lost interest as it seemed that nobody had time to do this, which was understandable (I am NOT pointing fingers here). There are many well-informed and well-read readers of this site, and it would be a simple thing to do. I would be willing to commit to post 1 news item a day (even though my garden badly needs me right now!), and if others were able to do something like this, it would provide a significant amount of articles.

    Just my 2 cents!

  7. EE Says:

Good luck Jon, I still check the site every so often. I wish you a swift recovery.

  8. Liz Says:

Thank you all, again, for your comments and your good wishes. Jon is indeed taking his break, though the temptation is there to get up and get on it.

Right now his vision impairment is a serious stumbling block in terms of navigating computer screens and writing. He is seeing an ophthalmologist about his eyes next week and hopefully we will get some sense of what is involved.

    We’ll keep you posted.

@ Crosbie, how are you doing? Settled into your new locale? Best wishes from us.

  9. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

I think the “Basically a democracy rather than a dictatorship.” comment rightfully pissed people off. Jon was never a dictator, he is a gentleman, both harder working and kinder than myself.
Having said that, I don’t think adding (not replacing the entire site with ) a forum is a bad idea. A forum does NOT have to be a wild west show ruined by Wild Douche Spammer. As commentors pointed out it won’t work left by itself, it still requires moderation. Anyone wishing to post there should have to register, no anon posters, maybe even in the case of the forum make people register for replies, just to keep spam down for the admin and mods. It’s really up to Jon what he wants to do, it’s still his site.

  10. Jon Says:

‘By not putting my message on here you prove to the world dictatorship and is your game’. No comment. Cheers!

  11. Dreddsnik Says:

ooo can I play too ?

But not creating your own site and posting a link here you prove to the world that your only wish is to disrupt the site with
    garbage posts and other piffle.

Buy continuing to whinge about ‘censorship’ and ‘dictatorship’ you prove to the world that your only aim is to flood each
article with attack posts that add nothing constructive.

By not creating your own site you prove to the world that your incapable of doing so.

By not creating your own site your prove to the world that you are aware that no one wold visit it, and it would forever
languish at the bottom of the google list.

    This is kind of fun.

    Glad you’re back Jon.
The pests have been in rare form.

  12. Devil's Advocate Says:

    @Jon / Dredd:

JHD seems to be the only right choice for that one.

  13. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

JHD? Sorry Devil, my mind is slow, that went over my head…

[JHD = Just Hit Delete - DA]

  14. Reader's Write Says:

It amazes me that there are always those that think for some reason because they have internet access that everything they put to text should be carved in stone to last into the next eon for the sole price of an internet connection and the ability to do the two finger dance on the kb.

It matters not that they are paid shills, trolls, or spammers.

I very much respect Jon for the forbearance I would not have been able to muster. Jon is the one that has seen to the footing of the bills. He is the one that has seen to the setting up of this blog. He is the one that has seen to the daily distribution of news in our interest. He’s done that in the face of continual spammer attacks, paid trolls by the industry whose only purpose is the diverting of what they fear and can’t deal with (today’s internet climate), and all manner of nutjobs coming through. (crap maybe I’m one myself)

He has been more than fair. I gotta tell ya, I’ve seen my share of forums and blogs. I refuse to ’sign up and be counted’ in someone’s for sale data base. Privacy happens to be a big hitter with me. So big that my browser is tailored to give the basic minimums necessary for communications and near nothing beyond that. I refuse to sign up for Facebook, I refuse to sign up for Discus, I refuse to be counted as a datapoint beyond the most basic of basics. It’s my computer and I can damn well run it as I see fit. This is not open for change, it’s not open for meaningful discussion that will alter this behavior, and I will instantly drop any site that changes to such. That’s the way it is. ARSTechina got the idea they could “make” their users remove the ad blockers, Torrentfreak got the idea that their solution to spam and income was the using of Discus for a commenting, other forums have had the idea of valid emails and registering as the solution. If you do not understand the political makeup of today’s world where internal government agencies go for all the info they can get without having an sort of oversight, then you need not worry. After all, you’re doing nothing wrong and have no need of fear…till they knock on your door. My methods may not be foolproof but I sure ain’t giving it up on a silver platter for them.

It is because of Jon’s fairly open attitude that I’ve been here as a regular. Some of the regular dropped off for some time as I did some moving that resulted in no internet.

Still doing it this way has caused Jon a lot of headaches in how to deal with spammers and the too often trolling by the industry. If there is a cheer in this, the trolls don’t show up till you make serious readership. Enough to effect public opinion in major ways. Jon has been successful in that and that is why the trolls show up on a regular basis. The idea is to disrupt what could develop into major resistance to the political bribing that goes on and to resist and put down any idea that might be counter to the desires of their masters.

Trolls are remarkable in their consistency. Acidic comments with near nothing to back up any sort of comment and a running for the hills till the next topic after dropping off their little disruption bomb. I tend to ignore them and go right on beyond their drivel when commenting.

    ENR (end of rant)

    Slow clap.

Isn’t there anyone our there in those thousands of p2pnet readers willing to help Jon?

This is a thread to help him out, not bash him, for fuck’s sake >rolleyes<

  17. Dreddsnik Says:

” “We warned you and kept on warning you yet you failed to change and adapt. You cut your own throats by your own dictatorship, censorship and fascist practices. don’t make me laugh. it makes my chest hurt ”

    Absolutely yes.
That is precisely what the RIAA is in fact doing to itself.
I will climb atop my pyramid and laugh.

    @IT Guy ….

That particular troll uses EVERY thread either to bash or to post a wide variety of rubbish, from ‘admiralty law’ to little green
men, none of it useful or real in any way. Sometimes he even posts something negative about HIMSELF under alts just to get
his words seen. It almost seems like an OCD, so even if no one responds he simply ramp up the crazy, filling thread after
thread with big wads of babble. That’s why JHD is the only option. It may take a while but once it realizes that no one is even
going to see it’s masterworks, it will disappear for a while. If no one hears it, it doesn’t exist.

  18. Quartz Says:

I’m happy to help Jon but its simply a matter of content, whats needed it for Jon to appoint an editor in chief who can deliver a brief of what topics we need and maybe a heads up on why that topic is of interest to the folks here (for relevant flavour), then with that management in place others like myself can gather information and construct an article fitting the brief, I have time like Dorothy to create at least one story a day but I would prefer it was as part of some managed framework and with a direction of Jons blessing.

From the initial posting I believe Jon was looking for something more than I have just outlined but if he isnt and a quantity of us are able to deliver stories for possible inclusion here under the p2pnet flag then I’m here if help is needed.

  19. Jon Says:

    good luck that Cheers!

  23. IT Guy Says:

Not only are sites like p2pnet, Techdirt & Torrent Freak supporting the huge paradigm shift that computers and the internet bring, but mainstream sites like New Scientist now are too. This is yet another example exposing the lies that Big Media peddles every day in the name of vested interests and profits.

“The challenge the computer mounts to television thus bears little similarity to one format being replaced by another in the manner of record players being replaced by CD players. It is far more profound than that, because it can bring about a radical break from the culture of television and a shift from a consumption model to a production model.”

  24. Reader's Write Says:

Cable TV companies and services are fucked but not the TV stations.

  25. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

“Hey FAC, why do you still blindly lick the boots of your label ?”

    @Dredd

Boy did you bring back memories with that one. The heyday of a2f2a, with Billy Bragg demanding a “consensus” which in his mind meant 100% of the a2f2a members agreeing 100% with him, which I always found to be the height of absurdity. You never get that level of agreement even with four people in a band, let alone a larger group with diverse opinions. To me consensus meant both sides giving up something. Billy wanted an extension of copyright, with the rights going back to the musicians for the extended period. Absolutely no one here was going to go for that, not after being beat up by rights holder groups like the RIAA for so long. I think most of us were so sick of the RIAA that an abolition of copyright was favored. Billy and the FAC musicians clutch to copyright as a lifeline, they think without it they would not survive, or at least not at the wealth level they have now. A consensus to me would have been significantly reducing copyright duration at the same time giving musicians more legal protection and rights over record companies than they have now. Polls taken showed that the majority would have been willing to work with Billy to achieve some kind of consensus, but Billy just complained that he only got a majority and not 100% agreement, which he was never going to get. He was very smarmy in correctly predicting a2f2a’s demise, but he seemed to overlook that his and the FAC’S intransigence were the major factor in that. Billy was instrumental in convincing me that Crosby was right all along, copyright has got to go. All it’s done is give the MAFIAA groups and Obama administration leverage to strong arm ISP’s for control of the internet.

  26. Dreddsnik Says:

” at least not at the wealth level they have now ”

    The key phrase right there.
Look at the ’shortlist’ of FAC members on the site.
All of them are very well off, Brag himself in a 1.5 million dollar mansion at Burton Bradstock.

Is being wealthy a sin ?
    No way.
Being wealthy while whinging about being driven to destitution by the Labels and the fans and supporting the suing of people who make less in 5 years than
what the wealthy man pays his ‘help’ ( servants ) in one year IS however more than just a bit crass.

It reminds me of the politicians that insist that everyone must ‘tighten their belts’ while grabbing more and more for themselves.
The entire FAC fiasco was a construct, a focus group created marketing campaign for a net tax, and we got suckered. A lot of
FORMER fans will never forget that .. ever. that’s probably why a complete FAC membership list can’t be found. The members know
that if they are found to be associated with the FAC their sales WILL decline.

    Guaranteed.

    http://www.ispreview.co.uk/story/2011/07/07/bankrupt-acslaw-uk-boss-escapes-ico-fine-as-wasted-costs-decision-looms.html

  28. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

    @Dredd
“that’s probably why a complete FAC membership list can’t be found.”
At one point in an a2f2a post I demanded just such a list, as well as who voted for and against three strikes. Billy’s response was to refuse and accuse me of going on a “witch hunt”. I tries explaining to him he was wrong, as in the original witch hunts people were falsely accused and killed by the government. The 2nd great “witch hunt” was AGAIN a government operation, the accusation and harassment of people in Hollywood during the 50’s where they would be accused and then blacklisted if they didn’t lick the governments bootheels enough.
I was in NO WAY suggesting either physical harm OR governmental action in the form of a blacklist preventing anyone on the FAC list from gainful employment. What I was looking for, and Billy damn well KNEW I was looking for, were the people who voted yes to three strikes so I could make a decision as a private citizen not to support them financially in any way. Yes I DID intend to publish that list on my blog, so that others could make the same decision I did, not to support the three strikes supporters financially if they felt the same way I did. I wanted the whole list as I also would have liked to throw my support behind the FAC members who voted against three strikes, and would have encouraged my few blog readers to do the same.
