US movie download habits

p2pnet.net News:- More Americans are now aware of Net-based movie “acquisition methods” than they were last year, with most households having the means to download movies.

And most people who have downloaded a movie didn’t pay for it, “a trend that mirrors the early stages of music downloading,” says Ipsos-Insight in a report which, interestingly, doesn’t mention p2p or file sharing even once.

“Nearly one-half (47%) of Americans aged 12 and older were aware of the ability to download a full-length motion picture off of the Internet,” it says.

That’s probably due to the sterling efforts of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) whose fruitless attempts to close down international BitTorrent sites have told Americans and people in other parts of the world just what can be achieved with a Net account and a p2p application.

“While actual downloading activity remains steady, awareness increased to 53% in the first quarter of 2005, suggesting a growing consumer orientation toward alternative movie acquisition methods,” says the study.

The report also comes up with an observation which clearly points the direction in which the studios should be heading, instead of following the ridiculous example of their opposite numbers in the recording industry who are trying to sue customers into buying product.

It found, “not only are Americans more aware of non-traditional movie consumption, they are increasingly surrounding themselves with movie related technologies in their homes.”

One in three Americans own a home theater system, “with DVD players and TV sets already having reached critical mass,” says Ipsos-Insight.

“Even relatively more recent video-related technologies are making sizable inroads, with one in four Americans owning a DVD recorder.”

Data also show consumer movie viewing habits are moving into non-traditional environments, with some 16% of consumers reporting they own a DVD player in their car, adds the report.

This is only the MPAA’s fault. If they didnt tell EVERYONE about their recent efforts to stop bittorent and sites such Thebigtorrent.com, alltorrentsallthetime.com, and freemovies.com (not real torrent sites. I just made them up..obviously), then people wouldnt know about them, and people wouldnt be any the wiser. Of course, if someone really wanted to find a movie download site, they would but only if they were really determined. the MPAA has only to blame for the rise in bittorent use. Yes, it probably would have risen anyway, but not as high as it has.

    YAY!!! I POSTED FIRST!! YAAAAA-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

It’s not _only_ MPAA/RIAA’s fault, a lot of computer magazines (at least in my country, in the U$ I dunno…) have explained in detail how you can download ANYTHING from either Usenet (one of the major ISP in my country has a very good news-server ;) ), edonkey and bittorrent (kazaa is disregarded by everybody as it should), really they explicitly say you can download movies/music/games/applications with those technologies, with screenshots and tutorials :D

Sure… all the fault of the MPAA. And RIAA. Whatever… it’s just like how car theft just rockets upwards when there’s news about it online. Or how pedophilia has increased with all the stuff about Michael Jackson in the news.

It’s so easy to predict the way you’ll spin each little story that comes your way. You’re as bad as the MPAA spokesmen.

What you’re saying now is that not ONLY is the mpaa and riaa victimising these poor torrent sites and downloaders but it CAUSED the problem in the first place! Shit, they’re as bad as drug pushers! Hey kids… get your movies here… lovely new movies… HEY HEY OFFICER! THAT KID DOWNLOADED A MOVIE! GET HIM GET HIM!

Downloaders have no free will, right? They can’t make decisions and take responsibility for themselves.

No, they are saying that the **AA have advertised to the public that these sites exist, and therefore people go to them to see….. as more and more people get tired of being screwed by the **AA’s.

    useless
