Microsoft Local Search beta

p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft’s efforts to dominate the search business have escalated with its introduction of Local Search, focusing on results from business, residential or local Web sites, “often accompanied by informative maps and aerial images”.

Google, Yahoo and AOL already offer local listings of this type but Bill and the Boyz say their version is an evolution of the existing Near Me search feature tailored to a geographic location.

The beta release is, “the first step by MSN Search toward delivering a broad local search vision, which encompasses geo-local search, mapping technologies, mobile search, local business and residential databases, and local Instant Answers related to news, events, movie times, weather and more,” says Microsoft.

Good old Microsoft, always a day late and a dollar short.

I guess it’s only really relevant to the US? I live in Hamburg currently and I typed in the name of the biggest church in Hamburg to test Local Search out:

    “michel church”

No results in the first page.

On google.de I got it as the second result.

    Oh well.

I punched in my street address and brought up the ariel view and the satellite photos appear to be 10 to 15 years old. There are large empty lots around my home that have had homes built on them for more than a decade!

Useless! At least Googles Satellite imagery is only two or three years old…

I’d be happy to see even that. Using Firefox with Java and popup windows turned ON I get nothing, well sometimes a map but no pics. Guess its for IE people only eh?
