Hanff on BBC Newsnight
p2pnet.net News:- Some readers may remember the torrent site DVDR-Core. When groups like the MPAA started cracking down on torrent sites, Alexander Hanff decided that it wasn’t worth it and stopped tracking torrents. The site remained as a hang out for old members and DVD lovers in general.
All was well until one day in early March, he was served with a lawsuit by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of Ameria). This despite the fact Hanff is a citizen of the UK. The MPAA claimed they had a right to sue Hanff because his webserver was based in California.
Here are the papers he received: 1, 2, and 3.
Unlike many people previously leaned on by the MPAA, Hanff isn’t settling and is instead fighting the case.
Last night the BBC interviewed Hanff on Newsnight as part of a larger story on the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Grokster case and he was allowed to leave work early by his employer to do the interview.
But to his surprise, when he showed up this morning, his employer has terminated him because of the interview. While they weren’t clear about the reasons, it was suggested it was because of views he’d expressed about his situation in the interview. To make matters worse for Hanff, his partner is expecting a child.
Readers who may want to help Hanff in his fight can stop by dvdr-core and buy merchandise, or contact him about donations.
You can see the interview via torrent.
