Australia nixes ID cards

p2pnet.net News:- Australia has ruled out the introduction of an ID card fearing, “identity theft by criminals”.

Attorney-general Philip Ruddock, “rejected media reports that the federal Government was considering introducing a national ID card,” says Australian IT, going on:

“His comments come as the British government legislates to introduce the country’s first national ID card since World War II. The UK cards, which Prime Minister Tony Blair says are necessary to fight terrorism, fraud and illegal immigration, will include biometric details such as iris scans and fingerprints.”

However, Australia is “pushing ahead” with plans to introduce e-passports with RFID (radio frequency identification) spy chips " to reduce the risk of identity fraud and protect people’s privacy, Ruddock said.

Implanting a device that will TRANSMIT your PERSONAL data without your knowledge to anybody who wants to fish for it…is suppossed to PROTECT from identity theft?!?!

    Bull, pure and simple.

E-passports are great, but so cumbersome to carry around. The other downside is that they can still be stolen and reverse engineered by terrorists or organized gangs.

That’s why I’ll be asking Mr Ruddock if I can have my passport’s RFID tag implanted in the back of my neck. The Bad Guys will have to go to the trouble of cutting me open if they want to get to it.

Although come to think of it, I remember hearing about a great ID system that was invented a while back. Check it out here:
