1M sign up for Apple podcasts
p2pnet.net News:- If anyone doubted that podcasts represent a major wave of the future, their doubts have been dispelled by the first serious commercial application of the technique.
Apple says more than a million people have subscribed to its podcast directory on iTunes 4.9.
Next up?
Part of a Q& ABC News’ Jake Tapper ran with Steve Jobs went like this:
Tapper: So here’s a quick question. There are gonna be 3,000 free audio programs available, making it one of the largest podcast directories in the world. Why are they gonna be free?
Jobs: Well, you know, podcasting – has been free since the beginning. It’s been an emerging phenomenon that – has been, you know, growing very rapidly. But we’re hoping to take it mainstream with – the latest version of iTunes, which has everything you need to podcast built right in it. So – podcasts I think they’re gonna remain free. Although I do think we may – start to see some advertising tagged onto them – you know, in the coming months.
Count on it.

just another reason to get your podcast off the edonkey2000 client and not from those trying to push the advertising onto us. At first I was displeased with the ruling that stated that podcast can not contain music. See here:
Recent court rulings have made clear that music of almost any kind cannot be included in podcasts (mp3 downloads), since unlike streams, podcasts are a physical copy of the audio, and music is not licensed for this use.
We regret that this means podcasts must be edited to remove all such music, including bumper music that leads out of commercial breaks, and any music content in the show.
As always, all streams of the show, including those delivered on demand, do include all show content, including music.

Update: Beginning with the Friday June 17th program and going forward, a technical solution was reached for the live M-F shows, so that the entire audio (minus the music) is now available for the podcast and mp3 downloads. Because this process is done through a live mix, rebroadcast shows from before 6/17/05 will not be able to be edited this way.
The weekend show, which is not produced out of our Los Angeles studio, may on occasion, have rougher than usual edits in order to follow the law. We are looking at technical solutions to this set-up as well.
Thanks very much for your patience during this transitional time.
I have been collecting the real broadcast off Overnet for a few years now and then got on to the edonkey2000 network to get some files off of the server list that the client has.

did they threaten to sue these naive idiots if they didn’t buy into this scheme?

So content from commercial proviers will ahve ads?
Big surprise. It’s not like Apple are going to insert unskippable ads into roots-level podcasts.
And on that subject – its a pre-recorded, time-shift environment. Fast forward them, it’s the two little arrows next to each other.
