p2pnet.net OT News:- Unless a comet can be destroyed before colliding with Earth, only those allowed into shelters will survive.
That’s the plot outline for Armageddon, a sci-fi movie which has the heroes planting nuclear bombs inside a comet to turn if off its earth-bond course.
NASA has a similar plan in mind for Comet Tempel 1– minus the nuclear bomb. And the plan isn’t to divert it. Rather, scientists want to crater is so they can study the differences between the interior of a cometary nucleus and its surface.
“NASA’s Deep Impact mission is slated to crash an 820-pound (371-kilogram) Impactor probe into Comet Tempel 1 and record the event via a Flyby mothership, orbital observatories like the Hubble and Spitzer space telescope, and a myriad of ground-based telescopes from around the world,” says Space.com.
“The impact is expected to take place at 1:52 a.m. EDT (0552 GMT) on July 4.”
And you’ll be able to watch it all on NASA TV.
