That`s the plot outline for Armageddon, a sci-fi movie which has the heroes planting nuclear bombs inside a comet to turn if off its earth-bond course.

NASA has a similar plan in mind for Comet Tempel 1 minus the nuclear bomb. And the plan isn’t to divert it. Rather, scientists want to crater is so they can study the differences between the interior of a cometary nucleus and its surface.

NASA`s Deep Impact mission is slated to crash an 820-pound (371-kilogram) Impactor probe into Comet Tempel 1 and record the event via a Flyby mothership, orbital observatories like the Hubble and Spitzer space telescope, and a myriad of ground-based telescopes from around the world, says Space.com.

The impact is expected to take place at 1:52 a.m. EDT (0552 GMT) on July 4.
