While BitTorrent has good uses – for example, you can download Open Office via BitTorrent – It is rapidly becoming a preferred method for distribution of very large files, aka Movies. Not that anyone I know uses it for such.

Opera could be opening itself up to some danger, since they are a real entity that could be sued under the premise that “You knew BitTorrent was being used for illegal purposes, therefore you are facilitating illegal distribution, etc. etc.”

I think I may know where Opera got the idea…
Moztorrent’s under development, but either way, Firefox will always be better than opera, just like Azureus will always be the best BT client.

What is best is subjective based on user preferences. Nothing more, nothing less.

i didn’t like it, you don’t have option for just to download .torrent file, but still too early

So long as they don’t market it as such, they will be fine. That is the crux of the problem, if you induce people to do illegal things, then you may be liable.

However, if you merely provide a tool with a specific functionality (say, a coat-hanger), and name it as such (ie: bit-torrent), you cannot be held responsible (at least not with good lawyers on your side) for the actions of 3rd parties (y’know, should they choose to steal cars with their coat-hangers, or download copyright works with their bit-torrent, etc.)

You sound like you’ve started to buy into the MPAA/RIAA arguments and SPAM. Keep yer head above water!

Well, using the ‘tool for theft’ thinking, you must admit that the biggest tool for piracy is the internet itself. If they just shut down the internet they’ll stop all of these P2P transfers and FTP transfers and HTTP transfers and email attachments etc.
It’s the internet itself that’s inducing everyone to pirate, no?
Duh. Picking on P2P is very very stupid. It’s like saying knives must be banned because they induce people to stab other people. Duh, the tool itself doesn’t do anything. It’s the hand holding the tool or typing at the keyboard that decides how it’s used. The courts are lost in space on this one. They are a bunch of rich white old guys (vast majority) trying to pretent they are fair and just but what they really are doing is trying to support the big money of studios and huge corporations with billions of dollars behind them.

No, I use Opera. Using it right now to write this reply.

I don’t want to see it get shut down in this sue-happy state companies seem to be in.

While the recent ruling suggests that companies have to actually promote a piece of software for infringement in order for it to be “illegal,” I can’t see it being long before another company tries to shut things like bittorrent (and it’s clients) down another way.

After all, they ARE losing soooo much money, you know.

And, if ya believe that, let me tell you….
