Sasser worm author sentenced
p2pnet.net News:- Sasser worm author Sven Jaschan, 19, has been found guilty of computer sabotage and given a one year suspended sentence.
He’s also been ordered to carry out 30 hours of community service at a hospital or home for the elderly, but won’t have to pay court costs, says the Associated Press.
Sasser wasn’t originally intended to be malicious. When Jaschan wrote it, he’d intended it to kill other viruses such as ‘Mydoom’ and ‘Bagle.’
But it ran wild and corrupted US Delta Airlines, the British Coast Guard and European Commission computer systems, among others.
“Jaschan was known locally as a friendly high school student until police knocked at his parents’ door in the northern village of Waffensen in May 2004,” says Deutsche Welle.
Microsoft had placed a $250,000 bounty on the head of whoever created Sasser and, “He was fingered by an anonymous acquaintance, leading authorities to raid his home,” says Deutsche Welle.
“They found substantial incriminating evidence - including the Sasser code on a computer he built himself - and Jaschan admitted during questioning to designing the worm.”
Sasser got into computers through security holes in Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP.
Prosecutors had demanded a two-year suspended sentence and 200 hours of community work, says AP.

Typical of the Germans. Like with the criminal who stabbed Monica Seles in the back and ruined her career, this computer criminal gets a slap on the wrist.

I worked hard all of my life in the computer industry as a programmer.
Moral of the story: If you want a great computer career, break into a buch of computers, write viruses that do a lot of damage, and get caught. You will have a lot of lucrative opportunities after you complete your punishment. Crime does pay.

$250,000 bounty hell I am starting to consider writing viruses and stuff myself. I have already got access to top secret (2 levels above actually documents) so what the hell, I might as well show my skills then get my roommate to turn me in. All I would get was a slap on the wrist, a good job, and rent/the apartment paid for for the rest of my life. What more can a person ask for?
