Apple’s 500 millionth download

p2pnet.net News:- Will you be racing to purchase and download the 500 millionth song from iTunes?

Let`s see: the half-billion represents the total number of downloads since Apple started peddling tracks for a dollar each in 2003. That looks like a lot, until you consider that in the real world of online music, thanks to the p2p networks, somewhere around 32 billion songs have moved computer to computer in the same period of time.

Nor do we know if the 500 million will include all those freebies from Apple`s bottle top promos.

Anyhow, Apple kicked off its countdown to half a billion songs sold on the iTunes Music Store with an online song counter so music fans around the world can participate in the race to purchase and download the 500 millionth song, it says.

Whoever downloads the 500 millionth song will win 10 iPods, an iTunes gift card for 10,000 songs and an trip for four to see Coldplay on their world tour.

It’s amazing that people are still willing to fork out a dollar (and more, depending on where you are) for these highly compressed copies of original music tracks.

But maybe that’s the difference between being a ‘consumer’ and a ‘customer’.

I am quite sure I won’t be the one to d/l that song. I don’t own an ipod. While you MIGHT win one, in reality only one will. The rest won’t. Nor do I have an apple computer. I don’t believe the 128 bit rate drm drivel to be worth a dollar on its best day, much less any other day. Lastly, I have nothing that I want to play an ACC file on. No need to try and set one up for one song. I will gladly pass on this and let some other one attempt to win it. I will wish them the best to win and won’t miss the oppurtunity as I don’t believe it to be one.
