The Movie Screener saga – III
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wants to know how an Oscar voter’s Something’s Gotta Give screener turned up online.
A screener? It’s worse than that. Copies of the Last Samurai are on the p2p networks as well, as Zapit points out here.
Its even worse than that.
Not only are screeners of both movies online, so are 21 Grams, A Mighty Wind, American Splendor and Big Fish, to name but four more.
Actually, Zapit, the Last Samurai – and Master and Commander and Kill Bill Volume 1 (edited and unedited) – have been vying with Return of the King for the coveted p2p networks Among the Most Downloaded award for quite a while.
In fact, as web programmer waxy points out in his blog here: “I commented yesterday about how screener leaks are far more common than the Academy realizes (or acknowledges), but I decided to do some research to back it up.
“I compiled a list of every likely Oscar nominee, using these popular 2004 Oscar predictions as a guide. Then, I tried to find downloadable screener copies of every film on the list.
“The results might surprise the Academy. Out of 22 films, screeners for all but one were widely released on the Internet. Of those, 10 were leaked over a month ago, and five were leaked over two months ago.
