Hand over your cellphones!

p2pnet.net News:- Guests at many festival screenings at the 2005 Edinburgh Film Festival will be asked to hand over their phones, says the Edinburgh Evening News.

“The extra security, which has been likened to checking a bag or coat before going into the theatre, is to be run by professional agencies who have provided the same service for major premieres in London,” it says.

“The companies are being hired and paid for by film distributors anxious to keep their best films away from the pirates.”

What about the actors and other celebrities?

It’s likely that even they’ll be asked to turn in their phones.

“Distributor Buena Vista International (BVI) has opted to have the ‘bag and tag’ security people to protect the content of the film from mobile phone pirates,” says the story.

Does this hint at the unheralded appearance of startling new technology – a camcorder cellphone able to store and transmit an entire movie?

Nope.

"Modern phones can take quite good images or a brief clip of the film which could then be put up on websites or used for promotion without the company’s permission," the Edinburgh Evening News has Jim Angell, director of operations for the Federation Against Copyright Theft, saying.

    “promotion without the company’s permission”

    are you serious?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Of course they’re serious. That promotion might “clash” with the company’s carefully crafted campaign of complete and utter bullshit. You know, marketing.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

They must be more important to prtect against.

However best not warn them about them or they’ll only implement strip searches!

  4. Reader's Write Says:

Don’t give the idiots ideas. Is this the next idea to stop people from going to watch any film what so ever ?
I know I wouldn’t be happy handing anything over to them for safe keeping.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

What’s the big deal as long as you get it back in the same condition in was in before? Instead of blaming the promo people, blame the people who have done this in the past. It only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch. And then ask yourselve this question. How much cheaper would things we buy in the stores everyday be if people didn’t steal? That’s partly what we’re paying for. So I don’t care, take my cell, but also take care of it.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

can you imagine them trying this at a U” concert or other bands’ concerts with 75,000 people?

    impossible, but they’ll probably try.

    a U2 concert
