Ninjam – Jammin’ Online

p2pnet.net News:- Justin Frankel of Waste, Winamp and Gnutella fame is back. And this time, it`s Ninjam and it`s under a GNU General Public License.

Wot it do?

It lets bands jam with each other online.

NINJAM uses OGG Vorbis audio compression to compress audio, then streams it to a NINJAM server, which can then stream it to the other people in your jam, says the Ninjam site. This architecture requires a server with adequate bandwidth, but has no firewall or NAT issues. OGG Vorbis is utilized for its great low bitrate characteristics and performance.

Each user receives a copy of other users audio streams, allowing for each user to adjust the mix to their liking, as well as remix later. This uses more bandwidth than having a server encode a single stream, but has numerous benefits (including lower server CPU use and the client having the full multichannel data for later use).

NINJAM can also save all of the original uncompressed source material, for doing full quality remixes after the jam.

For a sample,

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

with Dunce, Batman, and LaS_VeGaS. And on the samples page you can get the same, plus:

# a french song (with lyrics)
# a love song (with lyrics)
# a spacerock song
# another spacerockish song
# a long song with brennan, justin, and Cube7
# a big “floydian” (as described by someone else) jam involving proper live drums, parts 1, 2, 3.
# a big pscyhotropic jam
# lone’s ambient jam (aka Internet Entropy)

PLUS rss
PLUS an M3U playlist of all of the samples.
PLUS Some automatically picked songs (by some psuedo-intelligent software)
PLUS a live stream of one of a NINJAM servers (requires Winamp/iTunes/etc)
PLUS a whole string of other Ninjam music.

So what about MIDI?

“While MIDI has many wonderful uses, it also has substantial limitations when working with real instruments,” says Frankel and crew. “We intend to support MIDI in the future, in addition to audio.”

And the entertainment cartels think they`re in control?

Something you think we should know? tips[at]p2pnet.net

I can already see the campaign to try and force ppl to stop whistling, humming, singing to themselves etc. At least without paying royalties.

I play on NINJAM and its very good, sometimes there can be connection problems but this is down to server bandwidth but I played on some american servers from the UK and lag has no been an issue and it just works fantastic.

Some of the servers even archive everything that is played so you can put in your name and it will show all music you played in and allow u to stream or download them.

Another excellent thing about this great program is the metronome is tight, so if you have a good midiclock you can sync well. this is handy when we are short a drummer or bassist as it can be sequenced or a drum machine used.

Much fun and I recommend it.
