Labels stike deal with FBI
Hollywood already has a bill on the boil which would have FBI agents investigating and prosecuting copyright violations, including online swapping of copyrighted works.
Now the trade organ for Hollywood’s recording industry segment is apparently taking its Deputy Dawg image a step further through a deal with the FBI.
Under it, FBI director Robert S. Mueller III has agreed to let the R(FBI)AA use the FBI logo as a warning, LA Times writer Jeff Leeds has ’sources’ saying here.
How the logo will be displayed is up to individual labels, he says, adding:
“Many discussed placement of the logo – and a warning about possible criminal prosecution for illegal copying – on the back of the disc packaging. Label executives also have discussed including software that displays the warning when a CD is put into a computer.”
Rumours that the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is working on a deal with the CIA to track down the identities of file sharers suspected of sharing files are unconfirmed.
