To the trolls
p2pnet.net comment:- Every now and then we get trolls, trolling. Sometimes they can spark a discussion, but very rarely. 99.99999999 percent of the time, they just get in the way.
I’m doing my best to run a site which provides an option to the pre-spun journalism-by-press-release or clips garbage that’s becoming standard fair, and not just on lamestream media sites.
So if you’re one of the people who’s trolling, go ahead and post. But post something that has a point, not something that doesn’t.
Cheers! And thanks …
Jon

**please don’t feed the troll**
Yeh. I know. But I’m hoping the trolls will decide ‘real’ posts are a hell of a lot more fun and can get a lot more reaction – ask catflap, heh – than useless one-liners
And Guillaume Champeau? He’s a good guy : ) He runs Ratiatum.com over in France : )
Cheers!

eh? under a bride? LOL that would be something to write about.
i think you mean under a “bridge”.
anyway, an internet troll is someone who “trolls” message boards and newsgroups looking for ways to start stupid arguments. they’re the monsters of the deep. don’t feed them (meaning, just ignore them and they’ll go away).

For our pet troll, Jon has drawn the line and said here I stand.
I have seen successful trolls tear websites apart through dissention created by purpose. Getting members that stand with the troll because the troll is good at manuevering people. The latest troll isn’t of this sort of caliber, barely able to string any sort of disruption and having absolutely no points to make. In such a manner as this one is, it will never be successful in causing major disruption.
There is a huge difference between a troll and someone dissenting with your opinion. Those dissenting have points to make and reasons behind the points that have some sort of coherency. Trolls of the caliber we are seeing here are here for the attempt of attention but can’t pull it off, lacking the ability of originality and resourcefulness. They practice a sort of vampirism due to those defenciences. That is why catflap has so many responces from trolls. Catflap travels the net writing of her feelings with clarity and information. That gets the very attention that trolls desire and lacking that ability (and the work that comes with the terroritory to be informed) they are downgraded to the position of trying to pull the knowledgeable to their level as they can’t rise to the level of the original poster.
My congradulations to Jon, who has given our latest troll the rope needed to hang itself with and to sift out those that dissent from those that wish disruption (disruption being the true mark of a troll).

There are different types of trolls I guess. Just hitting reply to say something silly like “but non-trolls reply as well” could be seen as a troll.
What is off-topic is in the eye of the beholder. I just wish we have better ways to show and detect authentication as I like open message boards, but like to know who I’m writing with (and when the person is deliberately anonymous, rather than unintentionally).

Hello Russell,
Simply I am a regular member here who posts deliberately as anonymous, even though I have an account and can sign in at anytime. I would rather that the thoughts stand on their own value than some sort of recognition by nick that might influance the reader or bias them. If the words are worthy and the thoughts are of sufficent status then they will be recognised for what they are. I prefer that if my peers recognise my writing that it is on merit alone.

Don’t think i haven’t noticed how much more they like you than me.

People in this world will do what they do. The nature of this planet and or human nature seems to set individuals and or groups against each other. You attract what you focus on, regardless of whether you love it or hate it. Just as “a war for peace” is an oxymoron so it seems is “fighting the good fight”. Life is a mirror and sometimes the way to see how you are going is by the reflection of others. I come from the otherside of the mountain to many of you, and hold opposite points of view on filesharing, copyright, intellectual property etc. Initially I was drawn to this site by the news stories posted regarding P2Pnetworks, their users and the associated legal battles. I was genuinely concerned about where it is all going and the ramifications for all forms of “creators rights”,with it going far beyond hurting just the “cartels”. Greed does strange things to people, money is like the God of the material world. Imagine what we humans could do if we cooperated, instead of trying to get control or revenge over each other. Bring on the intergalactic space travel. It’s a tricky place this planet, seemingly setting us against each other. Anarchy might sound appealing to some of you, but it didn’t work particularly well in the “dark ages”. Time to move more into Abe Lincolns quote “I have malice for non and charity for all” we have more in common, you and I, then differences. It takes courage to have a good honest look at oneself. When I immerse myself in my own awareness and growth, I have neither the desire or motivation to inflict upon another, we are connected, and its all “return to sender”. Instead I will feed compassion, acceptance and understanding. Good luck to you all brothers and sisters.
