UK’s DWP in copyright raids

p2pnet.net News:- UK music and film industry cartel organizations the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS), the British Phonographic Institute (BPI) and Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) have been able to co-opt Britain’s Department for Works and Pensions into copyright raids.

“DWP anti-fraud investigators combined forces with the police and Trading Standards to swoop on wheeler dealers at markets and car boot sales in the North East, East of England and Yorkshire flogging the likes of ‘Troy’, ‘Spiderman 2’ and ‘Shrek 2’,” says the DWP in a press statement which looks like something out of the Daily Mirror.

It goes, on, “The Operation code-named Zouk, saw 57 people arrested who could face charges on benefit fraud and copyright offences – 45 of those arrested were on benefits. The raids netted over half a million pounds worth of DVDs and CDs.”

And, “Tip-offs came from the public and honest traders who are sick of taxpayers’ money lining the pockets of cheats rather than going on services like schools and hospitals and tired of being conned with shoddy merchandise,” it says in a grotesque rave.

As if.

It’s now routine for the entertainment and software cartels to use publicly funded enforcement and other agencies to act as corporate cops.

DWP must of gone some PR school as MPAA

We’ve already cut fraud in the two main benefits by 40% and operations like this send out a clear message to benefit crooks; ‘We’re on to you’”.

Wow they know how much benfit fraud is being done and they have not stoped it, is it at 60%. Now who on the take a DWP then? I think that bigger crime!

  2. Reader's Write Says:

i just saw a news article about the UK not having enough police to investigate murders because of all of the terrorist activity. Yet they can investigate and arrest dvd “pirates”. nice.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Well let look at this, DWP pay you fu*k all for you to find work and do mean fu*k all, at most £50 a week or about $35. Now you found out doing benfit fraude then you can not get no money for 6 weeks( ie £0 or $0 for 6 weeks). You must be looking for work in that time as will not get any benfit after 6 weeks, also you will have to pay them back.

In others words, you damed if do and damed if you dont.

I work for the DWP. The amount of money lost to fraud is high, but that amount is nothing compared to the amount lost because of offical error. If they’re not screwing us, we’re giving it away because DWP workers can’t be bothered to learn how to do their job….

Just as the DWP are cracking down on “benefit cheats”, they’re spending an equal amount of time & resources spying on their own staff… and when i look at most of the people I work with – lazy, militant and jobsworthy to an unhealthy extreme – I understand why…
