Sony, Sobini, in Zorro duel
p2pnet.net News:- Sony Pictures thinks it has the sole rights to Zorro, who first showed up in The Curse of Capistrano, “a novel by pulp writer Johnston McCulley that was serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Weekly in 1919, as Wikipedia describes it.
But Lions Gate-based company Sobini Films doesn`t agree.
It wants to produce its own movie about the legend based on McCulley`s book which, it says, it`s acquired the rights to, according to the BBC.
Sobini says Sony sent it a cease and desist letter, which effectively shut down production on its film.
Now it`s suing Sony, looking for a ruling that Sony doesn`t own exclusive rights to Zorro.
“Once Sony sent us that letter, it’s kind of like the kiss of death,” the Beeb has Sobini’s lawyer Bruce Isaacs.
And here’s the kicker ; ) Sobini apparently wants to, make to make a futuristic film with the masked avenger set in 2110″.
