Sony in Japan iTunes row

p2pnet.net News:- The Big Four record label cartel keeps on about how there are 300 corporate online music stores and that its Net music biz is exploding.

That is utter nonsense. Corporate music sales are insignificant with one, and only one, exception.

Apple`s iTunes is where it`s at for people who are willing to pay through the nose for their music fixes and the cartel-backed and cartel supplied `service` has just opened in Japan.

But, Artists signed to Sony in Japan are rebelling against their label’s decision not to make their music available through iTunes Music Store, says PC Pro.

Among them is top Japanese rock musician Motoharu Sano who wants his tunes on iTunes.

It`s an individual’s freedom where that person chooses to listen to music, he told business newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, says PC Pro.I want to deliver my music wherever my listeners are.

Of course, iTunes is where they`re not. The listeners are all on the p2p networks. But Sano`s point is made.

Talks between Sony and Apple are believed to be continuing, with topics believed to include Apple’s closed DRM system, says the story, adding:

Sony is thought to have asked iTunes to provide downloads in its own ATRAC format that is compatible with its Network Walkman range of portable players.

However, for the time being it appears that the artists will be suffering from Sony’s failure to compete with both iTunes and the iPod.

Vested Interest #1 vs Vested Interest #2 = Consumer loses out.

Actually both Vested Interests lose out as well, but let’s not do anything silly like try to stop them destroying each other. It’s fun to watch! <scary evil grin>
