Japan’s broadband satellite

p2pnet.net News:- Japan is to put aloft a giant broadband satellite to provide services as fast as fiber optic cable

It’ll send and receive data at up to 100 megabits per second in mountainous areas and remote islands, as well as aboard Shinkansen bullet trains, airplanes and ships, says United Press International.

Japan’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to incorporate research and development funding in its fiscal 2006 budget request and hopes to have services running by 2015, says the story.

And, “Officials noted since satellites are immune to damage by earthquakes or floods, they can be used to send live images of disaster-stricken areas and provide information to disaster victims.”

With a dish antenna 66 feet in diameter, the satellite will also receive weak signals such as those from a cell phone, adds UPI.

Stay tuned. And meanwhile, help us to keep on posting : )

It would be nice if we had access to high speed Internet access in remote areas as well.

The issue with using satellites, are the latencies involved. I don’t know if it’s been improved on, but from what i’ve been told there’s a 2 second lagtime between you sending signals to the satellite, and it getting them. 2 whole seconds, each way.

Which means, it takes 2 seconds for the satellite to get what you’ve sent it, then 2 more seconds for it to send that to your isp, however long the isp takes to respond, 2 seconds for the isp to reply to the satellite, and then 2 seconds for the satellite to send that reply to you. I’d suggest you don’t try using it for gaming, the lag would be horrendous.

There is nothing they can do about this, it a issue of light. Well radio signles travile at the speed of light and this takes x time to travle y distance.

Not even Jap’s can do anything about that!
