When the USA was first formed the politicians in congress and the senate were citizen volunteers who showed up in DC, spent about 4 months legislating, and then went home i.e. back to their "JOBS" for the rest of the year.

The downfall of the USA occurred when politicians began being "full-time" politicians with their primary focus being to keep their job year after year. Enter the RIAA, MPAA, and any other corporation that is willing to bribe them with the huge amounts necessary to keep those lucrative jobs. No more can it be said that a politician is a patriot. Slime is a more accurate term.

I fear the only way out from under all the corruption is another revolution. I suspect it will happen but probably not in my lifetime. But, you never know.......

Actually the Dmca was was just another example of forces that have nothing to do with technology and has everything to do with the level of political corruption in the united states and all branches of goverment in the united states goverment.

It is no mystery that the entertainment cartels contribute a lot of money to both major political parties for their reelection campaigns.

This also works for ANY CORPORATE BUSINESS INTEREST.

The United states congress is famous for propping up failing american businesses in the form of protectionist import tariffs and every consumer product like a computer is a luxury and a luxury tax to a democrap.

It costs a lot of money to run for public office and for almost every career politician in washington is like a shameless whore who will shamelessly take kickbacks and bribes from their corporate pimp masters even if it means that these scoundrels will pass legislation that is anticonsumer.

What's even more galling is people who buy stuff from the entertainment cartels are dumb and stupid buying overpriced and uncopyable crap from them.

It does not matter if one is a republi(con ) (as in con artist) or a democrap.

Politics and politIcians in general is a self serving thing where greed and self advancement and being a millionare is more important than serving the public.

Don't you people get it?

POLITICS IS CORRUPT TO THE BONE AND I NEVER IN MY LIFE EVER MET A POLITICIAN I EVER LIKED OR EVEN TRUSTED.

"movies often found through darknet channels suffer from inferior quality, consume a significant amount of time to obtain, and require the viewer to either watch on their computer screen or engage in the cumbersome task of transferring the movie to DVD-R."

I have a modified xbox which i use in conjunction with my tv as an all in one home media center. It is capable of playing any format available without cumbersome conversions, and It took me all of 5 days to perform the modifications.

Mr. Von Lohmann, in my opinion, has underestimated the darknet's power to provide it's own tools. Let's look at matroska for instance, which is still evolving, but is already more advanced a container format than VOB files used in dvd, and it's closest proprietary equivalent, quicktime. It offers support for any combination or number of individual streams, anamorphic widescreen, soft subtitles (in a variety of colors, positions, and styles), multichannel surround sound, and video in any format (and, if so desired, a primitive version of multiple angles which could easily be polished).

In short.. the darknet has already given birth to it's own file formats.
