‘Rehabilitating’ BitTorrent
p2pnet.net News:- Does BitTorrent need to be ‘rehabilitated’?
An article in the New York Times suggests that might be the case, and the thought is based largely on the fact that BT’s fame has come about almost wholly because it’s used by file sharers to, well, share files.
The huge amount of media attention focused on it is down to the fact that most BT sharing has to do with entertainment industry ‘product’.
Certainly, various politicians on the self-promotion trail found BitTorrent invaluable, and Linspire uses it to good effect as a product distribution vehicle.
But, “For most in the culture industry, the chance of the file-sharing program BitTorrent serving a positive function is as likely as Darth Vader joining Habitat for Humanity,” says the NYT.
Not to worry, though. Anime distributor ADV Films, “has decided to make the best of a bad situation” and will “publicize its new series ‘Gilgamesh’ and ‘Goddanar,’ it is releasing promotional packages – not in stores, but via the dreaded BitTorrent,” says the story.
“BitTorrent has been used extensively in a kind of underground environment up until now,” ADV producer David Williams is quoted as saying, going on, “There’s a large group of people who have it on their systems.”
That a fact, Dave?
“Dossiers about giant robots might not seem like the highest calling to which 21st-century technology can be put,” adds the NYT, “but as an act of electronic rehabilitation, it was a big step forward.

“…file sharers to, well, share files.”
This type of sentence structure is so over used. It was humorous the first time it was used, but it has worn thin. A well thought out and well structured sentence will always beat out an over used cliché.

Seriously, we have an industry devoted to creating culture?
My high school history and geography teachers must have been mistaken when they said that culture is an organic phenomenon that reflects the experiences of a society.
The New York Times basically said that culture just rolls off an assembly line like a car or a microwave.
“Show business” is fine.
“Entertainment industries” – I’ll have to accept the term.
“Culture industries”? F*ck off. My friends and I create our culture. It doesn’t come shrinkwrapped at $19.95 per unit.
Shame on you New York Times. Send the author, Charles Solomon, to a Social Sciences evening class before letting him write this kind of LAMEstream article again.

Clearly, the editors of The Gray Lady are still endeared towards this type of journalistic license to colloquialize.

I wasn’t aware that Bit Torrent needed rehabilitation. Did it misbehave? Did it drop bits? Corrupt the hash of a torrent? Fail to put all of the pieces in the correct order? Mine is working just fine.
Perhaps it isn’t Bit Torrent that needs rehabilitation, rather the people that use it.
But, oh, wait a minute, it’s not fashionable these days to hold people accountable for their behavior so we’ll just blame whatever objects or technology they use to commit their misbehavior with.

BitTorrent should be left alone, and so should all the other free filesharing programs that perform well. These programs are being used to rehabilitate our culture which has been poisoned by the media cartels. BitTorrent can also be used to spread home movies that spread real culture. Leave BitTorrent alone. It is doing just fine.
