p2pnet ‘HELP !!!’ drive ends
p2pnet.net News:- We’re closing the donation drive with a heartfelt Thank You !!!! to everyone who chipped in.
And on the final contributions list are: Hanno Stock, Andrew Guard, Andrew Gianniotis, Carl Graham, Robert Boyd, Sidney Zafran, Jesse Harwin and Jernej Slapar. Thanks : ) Your help is genuinely appreciated, as is the help of everyone else who did what they could with earlier donations.
We were trying to collect enough to allow Sixto, p2pnet’s un-paid programmer, to spend a decent amount of time on the new cms (content management system) without having to worry about money for his family, mortgage, etc. The new cms will let us do a few things other systems won’t.
As we said in the first HELP !!! post, “The new p2pnet is modeled on the existing one, but it’ll have a newspaper look with sections instead of just one index, as at present. The front page will have three profiles of people in the news, the main news lead (turning inside if need be), and 20 headlines for the day’s posts, each leading to the item in its appropriate section. Sections will include: Open Source, Hardware, Software, Wi-Fi, New Products, Pay P2P (not glowing reviews: just who and what they are, and how much), Guest Posts, OT, Register and Login.”
The new layout will also open up ad opportunities, making p2pnet self-sufficient (if you can call depending on ads self-sufficient ; ) and making it possible to accumulate a float so we can pay writers and hire someone full-time for the editorial side of things.
Did we raise $2,500? No. The total amount (so far) was $493 via PayPal. And that was, of course, before deducting PayPal’s fees, which amount to quite a whack. And we say ‘So far” because 12 people promised to send donations by snail-mail. To date, one has contribution arrived, and it’s from Britain (Thanks, Brian).
So, how come we’re able to close this appeal down? I [Jon] live on a Vancouver Island in BC, Canada, not to be confused with Vancouver on the mainland, 1.5 hours away by ferry. My ‘bank’ is Island Savings. Dallas Wilson looks after my account and after I explained my situation to her, she went well beyond the extra mile to help me out. For the second time. So, Dallas, thanks again.
I really hated asking for donations in the first place. I’ve been running p2pnet through advertising, an earlier loan and savings, but I’d reached the end of that particular line. But now we’re OK again and with any luck, there won’t be any further donation drives.
Finally, to Mike, Brian, Luis, Pablo, Greg (formerly ; ), Jay and Kaleb, the people who run the apps which advertise on p2pnet, thanks, guys. Really.
Maybe one of these days a grant or something?
But until then …….
Jon & Sixto

How much did PayPal charge you (what % did they keep)? I am curious, because they have been killing me with their fees.

… but they really gouge you. It’s almost as if the rates differ from one day to the next and on top of that, I’m in Canada so they get me for currency exchanges as well.
Cheers!
