Red Dwarf by phone

p2pnet.net News:- Full-length BBC cult shows Doctor Who and Red Dwarf will be available on mobile phones via £17 (about $30) Rok Player Digital Video Chips.

It`s the result of a first-time licensing deal between BBC Worldwide with Rok Player, says silicon.com.

Aficianados will be able to tune in to the Doctor Who special ‘The Five Doctors’ and three Red Dwarf episodes.

Rok Entertainment Group is predicting that this mobile content platform market will be worth £100m (about $180,136,000) per year within three years in the UK alone, adds the story.

Shouldn’t british licencefee payers, who have funded shows like red dwarf and dr. who with the tv licence have the right to watch these shows for free. At least in the usa when taxes are used to develop something it goes back to the public. ( The X window system developed at MIT using government funds is a good example).

Personally I don’t have much interest in watching TV shows (or movies) on such a small display, paid or not. When someone’s face is rendered with about 10 pixels I can hardly tell “who” it is… If some folks want to pony up the £17 more power to ‘em.

The BBC is awash with license payers money. This will just add to the pot, probably used to boost senior management pay as well as justify more overspend on the flagship news channel BBC News 24, which spends hundred of millions more than it’s rivals ITN and Sky (yet mantains similar qualities of output). They should use the cash as a severance package for Graham Norton, perhaps.

I took a flight the other day and to pass the time watched episodes of Stargate SG1 on my Palm LifeDrive. It was the first time I’ve tried to watch full length programs on it. I was concerned about the small screen as well, though it’s probably 2 or 3 times larger than a smartphone scree. I have to say that it was very enjoyable and I will be flying on a international flight next week and plan on watching more eps then.

    I wish I could fly.
