Pearl Jam mp3s, minus DRM
p2pnet.net News:- Shades of Phish and other high profile bands that now claim the Net as Friend, not Enemy, Pearl Jam is promising DRM-free $10 `digital bootlegs` for most of its 2005 Canadian and US dates just hours after each show has ended.
Each download will include special downloadable artwork and a slideshow specific to the specific night’s show, it says.
“The decision to exclude the DRM is unprecedented for a band of this size, but it’s consistent with the band’s sensibilities,” says Tim Bierman, Pearl Jam Ten Club manager which`ll oversee the download program.
But, “How can a band that masturbates to the smell of vinyl think that mp3’s would be acceptable to their fans?” – asks CopperTom on the Red Mosquito PJ forum.
“Very cool,” says owen meany, “but I also hope that there will be lossless copies available, either through CD sales or FLAC downloads. I get the impression this won’t be the case, and I’m disappointed in that.”
“Well, I still think it’s pretty damn cool,” says Buggy. “The band doesnt have to do this at all, and I think it’s great that they do. $10 for a whole live show of about 30 songs, and getting it shortly after the show is pretty neat.”

They did a song called “Spin The Black Circle” (in 1994) about how they prefer vinyl disc. Personally I never understood why people prefer vinyl to CDs but whatever…
It’s true it’s strange they “offer” mp3 since it’s a very bad format even at high bitrates but you’ll surely find flac versions….

People prefer vinyl for a few reasons.
1. Gatefold artwork that is huge compared to a CD
2. It is a more intimate format (not many will understand this, especially those who have not used vinyl)
3. Sound quality is better than CD (this has been argued to great depths… do a search) but this is only important to those who have a decent audio system where sound quality is important to them.
The factors that favor CD is that it is portable and convenient.
