p2p news / p2pnet:- Work is to soon start on a European search engine called Quaero.
Angry over what he calls the threat of Anglo-Saxon cultural imperialism, French president Jacques Chirac has pledged to help fund it to rival Google and Yahoo, says the Daily Telegraph.
“In a speech in Reims, Mr Chirac said: ‘We’re engaged in a global competition for technological supremacy. In France, in Europe, it’s our power that’s at stake.’ Mr Chirac’s intention is to provide forgivable loans to a Franco-German ‘multimedia search engine for the internet’ being developed by French group Thomson and Deutsche Telekom.”
The Telegraph has Thomson’s Serge Travert saying the new search engine was developed “in part” to combat the dominance of US companies in the internet arena.
But Quaero wouldn’t be built from scratch. Rather, it will be developed from “science and technology that already exists in France and Germany”.
“It’s time to go on the offensive,” Chirac said as he, “urged business leaders to keep their high-tech industries based in France to prevent job losses”.

Please remember that France and Europe are not the same thing. Nobody except the French has any interest in this racially-motivated garbage!
