Toshiba rethinks HD DVD

p2p news / p2pnet:- Japan’s Toshiba, together with NEC and Sanyo, has been promoting HD DVD, saying a launch was expected by the end of this year. Rival Sony, along with Matsushita, is touting Blu-ray and it seemed the latter had an edge over the former because of an earlier delivery date.

However, now, “We are now in talks with Hollywood studios and large-scale retailers to seek the most effective timing of the launch and best way to launch,” Reuters quotes a Toshiba spokeswoman as saying.

“We originally aimed for the year-end launch in the United States. But we have not really decided on that.”

But Toshiba says this doesn’t mean it’s about to abandon HD DVD.

“At stake in the format battle is pole position in the multibillion dollar markets for DVD players, PC drivers and optical discs,” says Reuters.

“The two sides tried to forge a common format earlier this year, without success, to avoid confusion and inconvenience of the kind that occurred as a result of the VHS-Beta battle over videocassette formats two decades ago.”

Sony and other Blu-ray supporters have already offered DVD recorders based on their format, but Sony Blu-ray recorders were launched before specifications for read-only discs were set and can’t play pre-packaged movie discs, adds the story.
