Thanks for the interview.

Fred von Lohmann points to the EFF proposal [1] for how to solve the compensation problem and I totally agree with the premises of this proposal that reads:

First, artists and copyright holders deserve to be fairly compensated.

Second, file sharing is here to stay. Killing Napster only spawned more decentralized networks. Most evidence suggests that file sharing is at least as popular today as it was before the lawsuits began.

Third, the fans do a better job making music available than the labels. Apple's iTunes Music Store brags about its inventory of over 500,000 songs. Sounds pretty good, until you realize that the fans have made millions of songs available on KaZaA. If the legal clouds were lifted, the peer-to-peer networks would quickly improve.

Fourth, any solution should minimize government intervention in favor of market forces.

I don't agree, however, that Voluntary Collective Licensing is the only solution. Why not consider a rights based solution [2] that competes with 'free', encourages P2P, provides business models to compensate the artists, and has no need for DRM.

Fred Von Lohmann is a good man. Phantom Poet Graffito share some of
his ideas about Big Music; especially the idea that the fan should come
first above big distribution, criminal activity. I guess this is the reason
why Spoken X Digital Media Group has decided to release "Classical
Legends" Raw eXclusive--Unmastered and Unforgiven for free on **iSound.com**. . .This offer will expire on 09/14/2005 at such time
that much dreaded $.99 cent tag will kick into effect; hey, I got a serious light bill to pay. Much love to P2P and Big Derek Sivers always
on the job; the Di Graffito X is too, baby!
