UK New Years mobile record
On New years Day, 111,000,000 people across the UK used their mobile phones to send messages to each other.
And that was an all time high, says the the Mobile Data Association (MDA) here.
"The use of text is also expanding into picture messaging as people explore the range of mobile messaging services that are becoming available," says Mike Short, MDA chairman.
Other stats:
- 14th February 2003- 78 million text messages were sent by Britons on Valentine’s Day 2003, 6 times more than traditional cards and a 37% increase on text figures for 2002
- 22nd November 2003 - 76 million messages were sent on the day England won the Rugby World Cup
- August 14th 2003 - 67 million text messages were sent on the day that A-level results were announced
- 17th March 2003 - 65.7 million messages were sent exchanging St Patrick’s Day greetings
- May 2003 - 65 million text messages were sent on the last day of this season’s Premiership
- 7th June 2002 - England v Argentina, World Cup group match - 58 million messages sent
- August 2002 - A-Level results - 53 million text messages were sent throughout the UK on 15th August 2002.
- August 2002 - GCSE results - 52 million text messages were sent throughout the UK on 22nd August 2002

Read the linked press release — it says that 111M messages were sent, not that 111M people sent messages.
It’s a shame this was misreported by p2pnet; the real story is of interest without being hyped into falsehood.
Unfortunately, Google News is leading with this erroneous story.

I was wondering about that, 111M seemed a bit much. I thought there was a max of half that in the entire country.
