Having lived in Japan for 5 years I can honestly say…. I have never seen an IPOD..(excapt in comercials). I am not saying they don’t exist here, this fact that Itunes Japan has experienced so many downloads is a testimate to their existence. However, What I see most is;
1. MP3 enabled cell phones. My 4 yr old cell phone is MP3 capable.
2. MP3 players such as those from Sony or Samsung.

Not trying to stir the pot here just posting my observations.

Sony had number one share spot for last 3-4 months over iPods, but recently gave way after Apple launched ITMS in Japan.
Currently, iPod has approx 35% and Sony 28%.
Not like here in the States, it is a close game in Japan.

Sony isn’t number one in Japan – atleast in terms of portable music players. It has a 19% market share to Apple’s 38%, overall. However, interms of flash-based players, it has a slight lead. Unfortunately, not for much longer, if the current enthusiasm for the nano is anything to go by.
