France joins anti-p2p cartel

France has been relatively quiet on the subject of p2p file swapping.

However, following the RIAA’s bid to keep its sue ‘em all campaign going and the ludicrous IFPI 2004 report, by an amazing coincidence, "In my eyes, there is no difference between shoplifting and Internet piracy, and the government’s position on this matter is not ambiguous," says Jean-Jacques Aillagon, France’s culture minister.

He’s quoted in an Associated Press report here., which also says France plans to "press for stronger laws to fight Internet music-swapping".

Lawsuits "similar to those launched in the United States" by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America" weren’t mentioned specifically, but "officials have said for months that such actions were possible".

In October, Herve Rony, general director of France’s National Union of Phonographic Publishing (an RIAA stalwart) told AP the NUPP "wasn’t ruling out suits".
