MacTheRipper goes down
p2p news / p2pnet:- The official download site for DVD ripper for Mac systems, MacTheRipper, is no more, says AfterDawn, quoting ripDifferent forums.
“The site hosting the official downloads, RipDifferent, received a ‘nasty letter’ from the Macrovision Corp threatening the site with legal action unless the download mirror was taken down,” says the post.
“The same fate happened to the developer of DVD Decrypter, but with his case, he signed a contract with Macrovision in order to cease the development of future versions of DVD Decrypter, whereas the author of MacTheRipper plans to continue his development efforts and is actively looking for new home to his product.”
AfterDawn points out the latest public version of the software is available from AfterDawn servers.

If not, it should be. Once the source is released, there will be no keeping it away from the masses.

The website was taken down, but the project is still there.
They’re looking for new hosting (probably in canada?). Nothing to see here.

Can’t say I feel sorry for them.
MacTheRipper uses libdvdcss (which is licensed under the GPL), but the developers of MacTheRipper are refusing to release the source code. They’ve said that they’re going to release the source code when the final version is released, but that’s bullshit. They should either stop distributing the binary or start distributing the source code for the binary NOW, as required by the GPL.
