WinMX goes offline
p2p news / p2pnet:- “Within the last several hours, neither myself nor Smitty have been able to connect to the WPN. It seems that www.winmx.com has dropped off the radar. …it also seems that www.frontcode.com has been taken down as well.”
So says HookedOnFonix in a post on the Vladd44.com WinMX Forum. But, exactly, is happening? At this point, no one seems to know.
However, WinMX was one of the recipients of the recent RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) Cease & Desist letters to seven US p2 file sharing application companies ordering them to, “immediately cease and desist from enabling and inducing the infringement of RIAA member sound recordings".
Meanwhile, "Interestingly enough, if one conducts a DNS whois for ‘WinMX.com’, the result directs owner ship to a ‘WinMX Technology Associates’ - not FrontCode Technologies as it has in the past," says Slyck. "Even more interesting is the geographical relocation from Toronto, Canada to Port Villa, Vanuatu. Many will remember that Sharman Networks pulled a similar stunt to avoid prosecution in the Netherlands and to capitalize on ‘tax efficiencies.’
"FrontCode.com is still registered in Canada. Kevin Hearn, who is usually readily available for comment with Slyck.com, has not responded to inquiries for several weeks."
(Thanks, DaBlade)

i think the iraa should pay p2p for their free advertising of their artist songs and albums we should have the right to a free open nap and u can share news tv shows and so forth as long as u dont charge money for them i dont see why they have shut us down and i will fight along side my brothers and sisters for this right we are not going to take it we will fight corporate and big buisness if it means never buying another cd again
this is a slap in the face to ppl every where
big money pushing ppl around again
artist and mainly their producers lawyers and so on make to much money already
u want to take music off the free market so less fortunate ones cannot partake in the pleasure of music
how sad and pathetic but we will fight we will fight we will fight u and we will win killdez2003 yahoo

September 21st, 2005 at 9:04 pm
What good is the old version if the cache servers are down?
September 21st, 2005 at 9:14 pm
I haven’t used WinMX for a while, bnut last time I checked it didn’t include any kind of advertising, and nowhere did it try to induce anyone to infringe.
What excactly is the supposed case against it?

I’d bet this is a direct result of the Kaza case in OZ last month. Kazza lost and had to pay damages, so now the RIAA types around the world think they have turned the tide and can threaten the networks directly.
As the networks are not out to make money - well, those that don’t hide spyware in their programs - then a threat of legal action from RIAA is probably enough to scare them. After all, we live in a world of litigation, where time and money rule.

Downloading ‘illegally’ GENERATES revenue
I did a mini survey about 2 years ago which proved this and I would like the RIAA and MPAA or any other authority to also exercise this same survey.
Personally, whilst having watched numerous movies that I have not paid to see, many of these I would not have gone to watch at the cinema anyway (no loss of revenue,) and the ones I did enjoy I BOUGHT. In the past 2 years I have PAID FOR over 200 DVDs; almost all because I had chance to preview them first.
Ask these 2 questions and decide whether p2p is good or bad…
1. From the CDs / DVDs you have PAID FOR, how many are because you had the opportunity to preview the material first?
2. From the CDs / DVDs you have ‘PIRATED’, if you were unable to download them, how many would you have actually bought?
My survey showed that a HUGE proportion of peoples’ collections were as a result of downloading and that the pirated material they would have paid for was significantly lower, and in many cases zero.
Conclusion: ‘piracy’ pays, and the RIAA and MPAA etc should be supporting p2p not opposing it!!
Please note: from the top 20 ALL TIME grossing international BOX OFFICE takings (not even DVD sales,) 15 are since we have been able to download efficiently.

Someone should file a lawsuit because this infringest on first amendmant right of free speech…..I can no longer talk with my friends….at least the chat portion of WinMx should be legal….but facism rules the world now.
September 22nd, 2005 at 5:37 am
i agree 101%
just my 2 cents p2p is just free promotion for the product like a screening
September 22nd, 2005 at 6:40 am
you should still be able to connect via OpenNap. Google search for a good .wsx server list and import into WinMX. I don’t think multipoint downloads function in OpenNap mode, but at least the software’s not completely useless.

whatever works! its p2p network! always online

I had been assuming it was a reaction to Grokster, which was held in a US court.
But either way it’s intimidation pure and simple. WinMX is a hobby application, not some big businesss. The Grokster ruling clearly doesn’t apply. Can;t Frontcode counter-sue for intimidation or something?
I wonder if Bram Cohen got one of those letters?

I can mostly say I am not much of a pirate. I have been a user of winmx for seven years, and I loved mx for the envirorement it created. WinMX Is like a home to thosands of users, A few good things have come off of this client, My friend: made money off selling websapce and webdesign to gaming/movies/music clans all alike, many users were programmers. bettering the winmx communite and devoloping there skills, alot of people met there spouce on winmx, belive it or not.
With all this said winmx was the best it possibly could be, and for closing words i would like to say: Thanks Riaa For Taking My Home Away, Now Yours Shall Be Taken. (Not A Threat)

The recording industry has been ripping us and the artists off for years selling full albums and cd’s with only one good song and the rest junk. Now that we have discovered a way to recover some of our losses which they have dished out to us over the years, it doesn’t seem to settle too well with them. How does it feel to be on the other end for a change. Even the artists themselves are beginning to produce and distribute their own material, which we think is great. The only one that should be absent from the scene relating to creation, production and distribution is the RIAA. They are greedy, dishonest and deceitful, not only taking advantage of the consumer but the artists and creators as well. There are ways around them and we will continue to keep just one step ahead of them and the only way they can shut us down is for them to stop production and get out of the picture all together on their part. We’ve got you and we are not letting go. Oh we will continue to be be disabled temporarily from time to time, however it is only the RIAA that is and will continue to be disabled permanently.

PLEASE!!! WINMX IS NOT DOWN!!! IS UP AND RUNNING AS USUAL:
1. download the file:
http://archive.winmxworld.com/Drac/hosts.zip
2. Put the extracted hosts file into this folder, overwriting the old
one - C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
***For Win98/Me users file location is C:\windows
3. Restart WinMX
et voila!!! the primary connection works..
More info:
1. the hosts file is just a list of primary hosts needed for winmx to
enter the p2p.
2. Once winmx.com was shut down.. nobody could enter the winmx p2p
network..
3. however, as you can see just manually entering a priming list of
primary hosts is enough to have it running.
So. WINMX IS STILL ALIVE.

WinMX peer cache working very nicely chaps. OpenNap networks are powerful too. OpenNap itself is reporting just under 46,000,000 files and/or 2,800,000GBs. The peer cache does not report it’s own stats unfortunately. It would be interesting to know and compare
