WinMX returns: Grazie P2PZone!

p2p news / p2pnet:- We just posted WinMX is down. Wrong. WinMX is back! And it’s all thanks to Italy’s P2PZone.

“Hi to all, i have a good new for all users of winmx p2p software !,” says a post on the site.

WinMx in funzione. Ecco la soluzione !
ENGLISH VERSION

With the collaboration of Polini_46 and a team of people who works actually to restore winmx connections, we can say the solution to connect on winmx network.

This is the procedure to configure yuor pc to connect with winmx :

1) go to this url : http://205.238.40.1/hosts/hosts

2) after download of “hosts” file ( is a windows file included in the system ) we can procede

3) now paste the new file “hosts” in the directory of windows which change like the version of s.o.

For Windows 95/98/Me the directory is c:windowshosts

For Windows NT/2000/XP Pro the directory is c:winntsystem32driversetchosts

For Windows XP Home the directory is c:windowssystem32driversetchosts

Now we can replace the “hosts” file .

4) for win2k & xp sometimes may be necessary use the command “ipconfig /flushdns” from the prompt of windows.

5) now, open winmx and try to connect with primary connection !

Really is a temporary solution but i think it work good !

Thank you to Polini, Ranma and Sabre for this solution, others update will appear in this topic ! bye .

ps. scuse me for the bad english !

(Thanks, Bennie and DaBlade)

===============

UPDATE: Linux users should just add the files from the above hosts file to /etc/hosts, then run WinMX with Wine or Cedega, says DaBlade, adding: “If it doesn’t work, reboot.”

hey has anyone tried this out yet??

  2. Reader's Write Says:

    Yes, it works.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    tryed it nothing happened

  4. Reader's Write Says:

How did you get it to work… i cant find the hosts file at all… any help would be very appreciated

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Loaded the new file, and its trying to connect but no luck yet… the info window of winmx does say im using the file tho…

  6. Reader's Write Says:

Were it not for the fact that DaBlade has mention of his name on this article, I would be wary of it. It is well known that hosts file is a favorite of hijacking methods. However, I am reassured to see his nick on this article and don’t think that the case.

For those having difficulty finding hosts file, it is located in the following path for xp…

    Windows>system32>drivers>etc>hosts

The hosts file is only loaded during reboot. If it is not seeing the changes, it means (as was mentioned in the article) that you must reboot for the changes to take effect.

  7. Reader's Write Says:

    Doesn’t work.

  8. Reader's Write Says:

    Didnt work either…

  9. Reader's Write Says:

Right, that url given above, for the host file, I cant even get into that site!?….

  10. Reader's Write Says:

The ‘hosts file’ isn’t always just one file.
It can be several scattered about.
Download the new ‘host file’ from the link above and copy
it to the directory listed in a comment or two below.
    Then roboot and try again.

  11. Reader's Write Says:

The above url let me download the file. Followed the above instructions and i am download from winmx as i type

    loving it

  12. Reader's Write Says:

if you don’t know what to do, and you are using windows xp, i hope this helps:

    1. right click on the link above, and click on “save target as…”

    2. under the “save as type” choose “text document.” leave the filename as “hosts.” then save the document to your desktop.

    3. after you have downloaded, remove the extension (.txt) as the hosts file does not have an extension.

    4. open windows explorer. (double click on my computer) and navigate to: windows\system32\drivers\etc.

    5. replace the orginal hosts file with the hosts file you have just downloaded. (or if you prefer, you can rename the original hosts file to hosts.old first and then move the new hosts file to the folder mentioned above.)

    6. try and run winmx. if after a few minutes that you are still not connected, reboot your computer. (mine did not require a reboot anyways.)

    good luck!

  13. Reader's Write Says:

    4 should read as:

    4. open windows explorer. (double click on my computer) and navigate to: windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc.

sorry…i hope the backslashes works now.

  14. Reader's Write Says:

hey folks.. thanx to all who have been working this problem.

    my question is this:

i have downloaded the file.. kind of unsure how to save it.. is it as a text file.. do i change the extension.. also.. am running 98se… the dir to save it to is c:\windows\drivers\? filename?

thanx again all for all ur efforts..

    mucho kewl!
    gypsy

  15. Reader's Write Says:

save it as a text file…but after downloading, remove the extension… so it just becomes “hosts” …

i am not sure about win98se…but you can try searching for the hosts file in your computer…it may be hidden though…but i firgure you would know how to look.

    good luck!

I note with amusement that both sides got what they wanted. The RIAA gets the central servers shut down and decentralized. And the most powerful force finally gets the control it deserved from the start. Its now controlled by the people. The only way to stop the web of hosts from growing is to shut down the internet. Power to the people!

  17. Reader's Write Says:

After installing the host files, do I have to reconfigure WinMx? I use to use a proxy server. Can I still do this? I think I have issues with TCP and ports not being open. How do I resolve this and does this make me more vulenable to hacking? thanks

  18. Reader's Write Says:

don’t think you needed to do anything with winmx…

if winmx worked fine before with you, more likely, it should work the same as it did…

you just needed to “install” the hosts file and you should be fine.

  19. Reader's Write Says:

amazing…thats all i can say.this program really works..
    many thanks

  20. Reader's Write Says:

Doesn’t seem to work for me. I am using 98se. I am also in Canada so don’t know if that makes a difference or not. Tried Rebooting, Primary & Secondary without luck. Maybe I’m even doing it wrong. I’ll keep rechecking what I do and try again. Hope some of you all are having better luck than Me… Cheers Rescue911

  21. Reader's Write Says:

here’s to say great job to the folks at p2pzone, way to go

  22. Reader's Write Says:

winmx: was fine b4 really hope it cum@s back very soon miss all the m8s i made on it too ! jade

  23. Reader's Write Says:

i have a big question!! everything you have directed towards the hosts thing is very clear except one thing. how do i delete the extension of “txt”? i am on an XP and it won’t let me change it. i right-click it and i go to “opens with…” and across from that is the “change” button, but when i go into that, none of the options are of just a bare file. and i can’t literally delete the “txt” from the name because it was already named hosts but with a hidden “txt” deep inside the file so i can’t change it. what should i do?

  24. Reader's Write Says:

well this sounds just great i have downloaded this so called fix and ofcoarse it don’t work i have windows me, i can’t change it from a text message, i don’t know where to put it, how does winmx know to look for it, the instructions are vague; now paste the new file “hosts” in the directory of windows which change like the version of s.o.; WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT? now we can replace the “hosts” file; WHY WOULD I WHAT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING THAT’S IN THAT FILE, I DON’T KNOW WHAT ALL THAT STUFF IN THAT FILE IS BUT I’M SURE I DON’T WANT TO LOSS IT. now what other stupid nonsinseis there, oh yes, use the command “ipconfig/flushdns” from the prompt of windows, THIS ISN’T NEW HARDWARE WINDOWS AINT GOING TO PROMPT ANYTHING, you know i don’t know much about my computer but i biult it myself and it works pretty good and everytime i run across a so called “fix” i can never get them to work at all if your going to tell us something please remember that not everyone knows WHAT THE FUCK YOUR TALKING ABOUT. can someone clear this up for me.

  25. Reader's Write Says:

I’m on 98se as well. I replaced the hosts file in the c:\windows with the new one. When running Winmx it said that it was running the beta patch in the text box and looking for connections BUT it sits for 30 minutes and NOTHING. I have reconfigured the router, etc for both primary and secondary connections and KNOW that is is correct. I DO get a reply ping from the address in the hosts file.
So if the working ones aren’t bullshiting, all I can think of is that not enough are on yet.

  32. Reader's Write Says:

    I can’t find windowssystem32driversetc, so i guess I won’t be using WinMX.

  33. Reader's Write Says:

I don’t seem to be able to do this so i guess I am out of the game now

  34. Reader's Write Says:

hey, is there any direct way to get winmx back coz i tried with those IP adresses.. but maybe im just confused because my host files are scattered and i dont know what im doing lol.

  35. Reader's Write Says:

    Apologies….It’s not bullshit.
This site has an exe file that works!
    http://www.winmxitalia.it/
click on “Scarica la patch aggiornata” for the patch, 98se,xp etc..
    Aust

  36. Reader's Write Says:

yeah i don’t really get it either.

  37. Reader's Write Says:

You Have to Select “Make a primary Connection” to use the solution provided above

  38. Reader's Write Says:

It also works if you are a secondary connection…Well done all that have made this possible and to the RIAA we say “Up Yours”

  39. Reader's Write Says:

cool thanks for the patch but in what file do i put it me, ME user. thanks

  40. Reader's Write Says:

good point i cat find this hosts file my self i think this is justed aload of shit

  41. Reader's Write Says:

I say who ever made this fix is lying for starters theres no file in windows called hosts and how does winmx know how to use it anyway theres nothing in the hosts file (the one you download) To direct winmx to it dont forget you not in stalling this fix merly just changing a file trust me this is a con i think people who has this file on there pc must have other sofeware on there pc installed like there network files and internet conections i think this host file redirect there connections when log on to the net and when you use this patch winmx picks it up because its going to though the internet connection anywy this file makes you think winmx connected but its not i think you are downloading of a websever not peer to peer i the people whos made this now has access to your pc if you like and another p2p software goto http://shareaza.sourceforge.net/ this one i used as well as winmx you can still get anything you like why fuck around with this fix that could be fucking up your pc winmx is dead lets move on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Reader's Write Says:

What an idiot. (the fix works, by the way)

  43. Reader's Write Says:

Jeez, Louise! Try reading the kind-hearted Italians instructions again. Perhaps they were a bit difficult to follow, but you shouldn’t be playing this game if you’re that dense…go buy the CD!!

As for the URL w/ the host file.
For one thing, RIGHT CLICK and download the freakin’ “host” file.
Try looking at it w/a text editor after it downloads.
    Should look like this:
    # $Revision: 2.1 $
    #
    # The hosts file contains information regarding the known hosts on the net-
    # work. For each host a single line should be present with the following
    # information:
    #
    # Internet address
    # official host name
    # aliases
    #
    # Items are separated by any number of blanks and/or tab characters. A
    # “#” indicates the beginning of a comment; characters up to the end of
    # the line are not interpreted by routines which search the file.
    #
    # Do NOT alter the following entry, it is critical for proper operation
    #

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    # These entries are to fix the defunct winmx.com names that have caused
    # this program to stop functioning.

    82.195.155.5 c3311.z1301.winmx.com

    More ip addresses follow

Then, go to My Computer and find (For Windows XP Home):
    c:windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

(OK so you have to add the slashes to the directions from Polini_46, but again, this is not that hard to figure out)

You might rename the existing hosts file as hosts.bak (just in case) and then replace that file “hosts” with the newly downloaded “hosts” file.

Select secondary connection if you had been using a primary connection

A reboot seemed needed, following which I connected to the network, sucessfully searched for smut, and now have several folks downloading to their hearts content.

Thanks much to the P2PZone for getting me back snagging free porn. (Oh, right, this is really about downloading Metallica and Madonna, NOBODY swipes and trades naughty movies…NOT)

And as for the RIAA, what a bunch of jerks, could have left it alone, but instead they definitely let the genie out of the bag. Let a thousand points of light etc etc.

    Spread the word, bloggers.

  44. Reader's Write Says:

    Open a command window,
navigate to the directory you put the file
    eg;
    cd c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

    then type (exactly as shown):
    rename hosts.txt to hosts.

to those people who say if you don’t know how to do this you shouldn’t be doing this… STFU and just teach someone something. Stop being a punk about it.

  45. Reader's Write Says:

the hosts file for windows98 is in c:\windows.

It may be listed as hosts.sam. If that’s the case, then it’s just a sample file and just save the hosts file from the URL to your c:\windows directory and it should work.

  46. Reader's Write Says:

I don’t think SHAREAZA is any where as good.

It does work, for me anyway. I wonder if you edited the wrong hosts file? Sometimes the os puts a dummy example one in there.

Search for hosts and see which one, and will be in one of these direcories..

    And sits in

    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

    or

    c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc

  63. Reader's Write Says:

do you know where my hosts folder will be for windows me? because i can’t seem to find it.

  64. Reader's Write Says:

i’m still looking for my hosts folder so i can download the new hosts files. above, it said For Windows 95/98/Me the directory is c:windowshosts but i still can’t find the hosts folder. i showed all the hidden folders, it’s still not there.

  66. Reader's Write Says:

there is a folder called hosts – first u prop need to view hidden files and folder and also view hidden os files 9from folder options in windows explorer

their note should read “folder”/hosts or similiar

look for a folder name at the beiginning of the text

  67. Reader's Write Says:

    its actually c:\windows\host
I just open the file using notepad and paste the IP addresses to the host file and save. works like a charm. Also you can just name the downloaded file “host” and put it in the above directory.

  68. Reader's Write Says:

In WinXP home, its in c/windows/system32/drivers/etc/

I am using it and I am now back online withy WINMX and it works GREAAAAT!!

If I can help, my email is teenboyz@gmail.com

  69. Reader's Write Says:

It really works!! You can do it too

  70. Reader's Write Says:

Well I just tried it – works fine :)

    Thanyou :) ))))))))))

  71. Reader's Write Says:

now that I can access the given URL, i have d/l the host file and am back in business! cheers.

  72. Reader's Write Says:

This is works well for me, simple but effective. Great !! Thanks to all those involved.

  73. Reader's Write Says:

hi and bless you it works ok just alittle bit slow but keep working on it

    long live WIN MX

  74. Reader's Write Says:

alright i found it now. so i copied and pasted all the new hosts files in the host directory and saved them. i’m trying to open winmx using primary connection, but it won’t let me because everytime i click primary connection, it says my connection type is slower than Cable, DSL, T1, T3+

  75. Reader's Write Says:

if you do not have the folders mentioned just make them then put the host file in the ect folder then it will work cause i never had those folders so i just made them i use xp now i got it working fine now its never better !!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Reader's Write Says:

Downloaded, put the file in the folder, rebooted, and it works great! My only suggestion to some out there is to please go into your options and bump up how many seconds it takes for downloads and uploads to timeout. The system is still a bit slow, and I’m seeing folk timeout who might otherwise connect because they have this set too low.

  77. Reader's Write Says:

Must be doing some thing wrong. Can’t seem to be getting it working at all…..

  78. Reader's Write Says:

    Yep it works :)

  79. Reader's Write Says:

AWSOME! worked first try, no reboot, Win MX lives!, I am leaving my computer on full time as a primary connector which may help keep the network alive. I’m grateful for this fix, Thanks.

  83. Reader's Write Says:

HELP IS NEEDED!!! ok i can find the ‘hosts’ file on windows 98 it is jst in c windows then the file is there. I have copied and pasted it and replaced the hosts file but i cant use the secondary connection because of the no tcp for incoming connections and no UDP port for incoming and outgoing packets. I really need to get this working but i cant.

  84. Reader's Write Says:

Was working, but doesn’t seem to be working now.

  85. Reader's Write Says:

I downloaded the above and have enjoyed getting my songs this way. I recommend this.

  86. Reader's Write Says:

I have replaced the host. My question is how in what format do I save the replaced host. Is it okay if it’s saved in text format? Will it work this way? Thank you..

  87. Reader's Write Says:

AAAAARGH! Can someone please rewrite these instructions in nontechnical English for folks who can’t code but love to share files? I REALLY don’t want to learn to code just for this, but I swear I will if I must.

    A diehard fan
