Microsoft, Intel, back HD-DVD

p2p news / p2pnet:- For Sony, it’s Betamax all over again.

Twenty years ago it lost out to VHS as the video standard and now Intel and Microsoft say they’ll get behind Toshiba’s HD-DVD, leaving Sony’s Blu-ray DVD – and Apple – out in the cold.

“Toshiba has also won the backing of Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. and Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures for its standard, while Sony can count on its own music and film library for content,” says Bloomberg News.

At one point, there was hope that the two would collaborate on a hybrid solution, but there has been no agreement so far, says the BBC, going on:

“Although the computing and entertainment industries are keen to avoid two formats, the computing industry has overcome such problems in the past by offering drives that can read different formats. But the industry has learned from early format wars, such as the battle between VHS and Betamax video formats, which resulted in consumer confusion and the demise of Betamax.”

Blu-ray supporters claim their technology is more sophisticated with a greater storage, while HD-DVD backers say their technology will be less expensive and available sooner.

    Yea, you heard me!

As long as PS3 will use Blu-ray first, and 360 will not use hd-dvd, then Blu-ray will win!

It doesn’t matter who supports it… it matters by how many people have easy cheap access to players… and since PS3 will come with a Blu-ray player… then no one is gonna want to pay for an expensive HD-DVD player.

Besides… Sony owns a LOT of studios… so all their movies will come out in Blu-ray!

Sony already experianced the Betamax problem… they wont make the same mistakes twice!

    DRM’d crap1 vs DRM’d crap2

Now that you have dropped your load over a blu-ray format disc, don’t you realise sony is one of the biggest cartel members procecuting women and children to downloading online?

In the end both formats will be jam packed with DRM. So it’s not as if they are a saving grace.

The only advantage HD-DVD has is that it will work with existing players, or so i’ve read. That might be incorrect though.

Sony just wants to control everything, and i’m certain that would be a bad thing.

Good points in the post I’m replying to. Right now I only like Blu-Ray more because of the capacity. Otherwise, I’ll probably go with whichever DRM is cracked first lol. Neither are of real interest to me though since I’m still happy with DVD for now, though I’ll probably end up buying a PS3 anyways (for the games of course, no other reason).

Funny quote of the day: “DRM’d crap1 vs DRM’d crap2″.
