Cell phones with GPS
p2p news / p2pnet:- Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation could become the next “breakout” cell phone feature.
And one of the applications could mean phones would in effect become remote spy systems through which parents could track their offspring.
Nearly 86% of 171 people with mobiles that offer visual display screens said having a GPS navigation feature would be either “very important” or “nice to have” on the next handset they purchase, says Ipsos Insight .
The response to GPS followed closely behind email, text messaging, and camera features, also considered utilitarian features, and greatly exceeded responses of demand for cell phone capabilities for watching TV (42 percent), downloading video (38 percent), and watching movies (33 percent).
According to the company’s Todd Board, one potential GPS application, could be for “anxious” parents.
“We’re seeing more focus on adaptations of cell phones specifically for the pre-teen market, with various `one-button’ contact and security features,” he said. “Certainly GPS could play well there.”

why do they need GPS??? They can already have to locate a phone for 911 services, it is just a matter of adding the programming to use that information on the phone and adding software to use that for directions.
Isnt triangulation better on a phone anyways? You dont have to have the ability to recieve data from a sattelite which means you dont need more equipment in your phone.
The thing I cant wait for is for phones to start to be MP3 players (screw the new phone with ipod, 100 songs no matter the memory you buy can kiss my @$$) A phone the size of current phones that can also hold 10 gigs of music would rock!

I need to learn SymbianOS and other cellphone operating systems so that I can be the first one to program spyware that will text message cellphone holer’s locations. This would be a great boon to SMS spammers. Maybe I can make a bit of money before all the other a$$h07es do it. Nahh, I don’t want to make money that way. But I bet there are many others that do

all cellphones can be used to track you with the existing tech that is in use today , old news – the phones will only receive sat signals not transmit them so in fact there is nodifferencein the way that the location is triangulated.

The FCC’s E911 mandate requires that cell phone service providers be able to locate the position of phones ostensibly for 911 emergencies. This requirement is being met by several of the large carriers by incorporating a GPS reciever in cell phones. Other carriers are using a method of triangulation and time differential. Since the GPS method meets the FCC requirement AND can be sold as an “enhancment” to customers basic service I would presume that most carriers with move twards GPS enabled phones eventually. “They” can locate you anytime, as long as your battery is not dead or removed. It would be possible for a phone to record your movments via GPS even outside of service areas then upload the data when back in a covered area. Should I be putting on my tin-foil hat now? Maybe…
Anyway, pretty handy for them to be able to sell a requirement as an “enhancment” to basic service. Your phone will have GPS, you will have to pay extra to have any access to it…

Meh… I got a cell phone a few years back and then had a pretty bad accident a year or so later that left me unable to go get help and no one was around… Without my cell phone i would have been in pretty bad shape… These days I dont go out without it…
