Sony Sucks by SonySux
p2p news / p2pnet:- Congratulations, you managed to get this album past me, posts SonySux in an open letter on Sony`s very own Sony Music Forums.
1) When I put the CD into my PC`s CD reader, the tracks wouldn`t show up in Windows Media Player, I instead had to screw around with the worthless app that comes with the CD to get it rip the tracks to my PC. Strike 1.”
SonySux was talking about Switchfoot from San Diego who proudly released Nothing Is Sound. But the band quickly picked up on the fact their new album came with a serious problem ——– DRM – Digital Restrictions Management.
So they immediately posted an anti-DRM work-around on Sony`s site. And Sony left it there.
2) The app that comes with the CD rips at 1mph. Tops. Strike 2,” SonySux says, going on:
3) I have Creative Labs Zen Xtra 30gb and tried to send the songs to my MP3/WMA player. No dice. My software just refuses to send it. I now have to START SURFING THE WEB TO FIGURE OUT HOW I CAN GET THE MUSIC I PAID FOR ON TO MY OWN DIGITAL MUSIC PLAYER!!!!!! Strike 3.
Three strikes and you`re out!
I now know what to look for on the back of a CD. I now see the warning. Guess what, I`m not buying anymore CDs with those warnings!!!!! Period. Sony, you just lost a customer unless you straighten up!
However, “EMI has recalled a best-selling CD after it was inadvertently encumbered with over-zealous DRM,” reports The Register. And Sony has recalled a web posting by one of the bands advising fans how to unbork the borked disc.”
Nothing Is Sound was #3 on the Billboard last week, adds the story.
It hasn’t show up on p2pnet’s Top Ten download chart yet. But it will ; )

Anyone know what company does this drm? Is this the sunncomm one? If not, does disabling autorun disable to copy protection. Thanks.

Sony is not the problem… Its Sony Music… which is a completely different branch than the rest of Sony.

I believe the Switchfoot band member’s post said disabling autorun does stop their software running. However, better to get the album via other means and avoid the hassle…

I’d like to know how ‘recalling’ a web posting actually works. Is there some magic protocol that goes about hacking into everyone’s computer to permanently erase it? Does it send an emergency message to Alexa and the waybackmachine to snuff it? Or does it simply activate a phalanx of lawyers who start churning out John Doe subpoena’s for the ID’s of everyone who might have seen it on the ‘net so the Men in black can visit them and give them the ‘flash treatment’?
Sounds to me like this is more like ‘unringing a bell’.
