Cellphone spam
p2p news / p2pnet:- You think email spam and those infuriating telephone `marketing` calls are bad? You ain`t seen nothin` yet.
Mobile marketing executives say the potential to hawk goods over cell phones is big, states Red Herring. But marketeers still have a couple of problems to clear up before they can really start polluting the valuable cellphone time you, and not them, pay for.
Cross the line into cellular spam and a brand can easily offend a customer,” says the story. “But smart, targeted ads have already proven to be an effective branding tool.
In Western Europe and Asia, brands already regularly use wireless as a promotional tool and some 84% of Europeans are “open to the prospect of receiving text-message ads on their cell phones,” Red Herring has Empower Interactive saying, But only 20 percent of U.S. mobile phone users received an ad text message on their cell phones last year, and the vast majority of that group found the messages annoying or deleted them, according to research firm Yankee Group.
The executives interested in the field`s possibilities said the U.S. industry faces challenges including carriers that micromanage the mobile marketing process and cell phone ad campaigns that cannot move across carrier networks. What`s more, consumers are unfamiliar with the industry, which causes anger over intrusive cell phone ads.
Carriers need to relax control of the mobile marketing process, states Mark Kaplan who works for a new-media advertising firm and, “U.S. carriers will stop a text-message campaign if they do not approve of every aspect of it, said analysts and industry executives,” Red Herring continues.
“This level of control is unheard of in established markets in Western Europe and Asia, according to the analysts” and, Asking consumers to pay to download or access an ad won`t work in the US, believes Gary Towning, another ad agency executive. People really don`t want to pay for advertising, he said. It`s hard for a brand to create a campaign that consumers will get excited about, if the consumer has to foot the bill, he added.
No kidding.
But, in countries like the United Kingdom, subscribers regularly spend a few cents for a text-message ad. There, fast-food giant McDonald`s had a text-message ad campaign using the movie Monsters Inc. that charged consumers to view it, said Cyriac Roeding, president of CBS Mobile.
The funny thing was the consumer paid 20 cents to receive marketing and even sent the ads to their friends, said Roeding.
Then comes the part which really gets down to basics.
The cell phone is the single best way to find the targeted youth demographic, he added, says the story. If you want to talk to the 18- to 35-year-old, you have to make sure you are always on the media platform your target group loves – that`s the cell phone.

Red Herring – Cell Phone Ads Are On the Way, September 29, 2005

The thing about the ads is one person can pay for it and then share it without paying by sending to other people!!!!! They only work if people consider them funny or interesting enough to do this.
Also in Europe you cannot send messages to phones without people’s consent, so spam is not an issue at all in reality. There are facilities to complain about any spam you recieve and due to the nature of the SMS system it is usually easy to track any violaters of the rules.

Cell phone spam is the single most annoying spam I have had to contend with. Everytime I get one I report it to my provider. I am sick to fucking death of being woken up at 4am by some fucking spam txt message.
It should be illegal, and making people pay to receive them (when they never even asked for them) should amount to theft or fraud.
It is about time the legislators started to take a very hard line on spam. In fact, like the entertainment feel that chinese “pirates” should be jailed, I feel that the executives of companies that engage in cell phone spam should have their genitals removed by a toothless goat on LSD.

The very simple solution is to turn SMS off. I called my carrier and they were more than happy to oblige.
Anger? Offending brands? What did the marketers expect when they send you a message and you foot the bill? Personally, I think that those in Asia/Europe don’t have their heads screwed on straight if they *like* getting these messages and even send them on to friends, and they foot the bill to boot. Just a bunch of sheep if you ask me.
I for one am glad that my carrier has tight control of their network, and that they are blocking alot of this crap. I say no to spam, spim, and spit. It’s bad enough that the marketers are trying every avenue to separate money from their owners. Now they are trying to place ads inside video games.

In the USA, it is simply illegal to transmit a marketing message where the recipient has to bear any of the true cost of it’s receipt.
Therefore, telemarketing cold calls on cell phone are illegal (recipient pays for airtime.) Junk faxes are illegal (Recipient pays for paper and toner. Ironically, most junk faxes are offers for paper and toner, presumably because the junk faxes exhaust all of the victim’s supplies.) SMS Spam is illegal as well, unless the wireless carriers stop charging for inbound messages. Currently, it costs me 2 cents whenever I receive an inbound SMS.

I would love to get cell phone spam as long as it didnt cost me anything and that it was stuff i signed up for through the cell phone company.
For example If my provider said” hey we have this program where you can get discounts and “exclusive” rewards or price deduction by signing up to allow certain companies send a text message about a promotion” id do it depending on what it might be
For example if i was to get a text from Future Shop saying “SONY 50 pack DVD-Rs THIS WEEK ONLY 14.99(can)” and then make you have to show them the text message with a certain “code number” to get the discount that would be kickass.
I know some companies do have deals with providers that when you go into the wap browser and go to a certain section you can go to the companies part and it will have the current sale going on. I used it once for a clothing store it was a good idea.
But Id want a SPAM SPAM SPAM alert ringtone lol

It’s not illegal in Oz, but it doesn’t happen at all.
Why not?
Cause the Sender pays for calls, sms, mms, etc etc etc in Oz, not the recipient.
Guess all that “valuable marketing” somehow doesn’t justifty the cost of sending the messages or making the calls, even with bulk discounts huh?
