European Broadcast Flag plan

p2p news / p2pnet:- A European plan, similar to America’s reviled Broadcast Flag, could result in standards that restrict the public and manufacturers, says the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation).

The Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB) is, “much more sweeping than the one they tried for in America," says Cory Doctorow, EFF’s European affairs coordinator.

"The North American Broadcasters’ Association has threatened to turn this into a global regulatory mandate. If that comes to pass, you’ll never know which TV shows your devices can record or whether a new device will be allowed onto your home network. Additionally, this will give a veto over technology to entertainment companies, who’ve already ruled out open source because it lets users modify their own equipment."

The EFF has now filed comments with Britain’s Department of Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) expressing concern over the DVB.

The DVB group creates standards for digital television in Europe, Australia, and much of Asia and its proposed, extremely complex, system for restricting digital broadcast programming after reception is analogous to the “disastrous broadcast flag proposal in the United States,” says the EFF.

Called ‘Content Protection Copy Management’ (CPCM), it’s been under discussion since 2003. Its restrictions include an ‘authorized domain’ governing the number of devices that can use content and a, “myriad of broadcast flags that will restrict usage, recording, and storage,” states the foundation, adding:

“They also specify compliance rules for all manufacturers. As with the US broadcast flag proposal, these compliance rules would result in a ban on the use of free and open source software in connection with digital TV reception and usage.”

Fortunately, it doesn’t have DRM enabled. When this new DRM comes out, I will be sure to post recorded shows on p2p networks and FreeWan Cells.

This is outrageous. How the hell can they even consider doing this kind of facist crap. Next they will try and filter specific media stations to stop people hearing opinions outside their native country.

I’m going to be firing off alot of emails in the next week. These morons wont be satisfied until they control every aspect of our daily life.

I am an American, and I know that I AM sick of American corporate ideas. I would resists if I could find people to join me. However, America is slowly becoming like the old Soviet Union. It is hard to find anyone who isn’t brainwashed by the system :-(

People are sick of it, but nobody cares… money talks in EU too…

  7. Reader's Write Says:

Yeah and we all know that petitions are sucessfull…

Did you manage to see what happened with http://www.stopdataretention.com petition? 50927 people signed it, but the thing sailed thru parliment… the power of the people in “new democracy” is nil… :(

The only thing that talks is money nowadays :( .
So I think what should be done, if/when this system will be implemented, is to advise people not to buy decoders/tv`s/home recorders etc, that have this system implemented into them. The manufacturers would see that they have wasted alot of hardware, and therefore, will have two options,

1.) Eitheir to keep making these broadcasted flag products, in the hope, that someone, someday will buy them.
2.)Not to produce these products (broadcasted flag products) at all, and will tell the Government/Media companies to fcuk off, with their laws and enforcments.

The more time passes, the more I see the 21st century as the new Dark ages of the modern society. I back in those day what the church said and wanted was done, even though it was stupid and utterly not true (the excuses the church invented). Today we have the media companies and the corrupt/bribed governments who want to do the same to the society who ironically voted them to be their in power to represent them!!!!! And another irony to the situation, Hollywood was made rich because consumers made them rich, not by themselves!!!!!
